Aggregation and stability of sulfate-modified polystyrene nanoplastics in synthetic and natural waters

Junyu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the aggregation and stability of polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles under different hydrochemical conditions. The presence of natural organic matter (NOM) was found to be the most significant factor affecting NP aggregation in waters with high ionic strength and NOM content. PS NPs were highly suspended in all freshwaters and wastewater, while they aggregated rapidly and deposited in seawater.

Understanding plastic degradation and microplastic formation in the environment: A review

Kai Zhang et al.

Summary: Plastic waste pollution is a global issue that poses a potential threat to ecosystems and human health, but knowledge on plastic environmental degradation and microplastic formation is still limited. Future research should further study the key factors influencing plastic degradation to predict the fate of plastics in different environments.

Improved Raman spectroscopy-based approach to assess microplastics in seafood*

Matthew Ming-Lok Leung et al.

Summary: This study addressed the common technical challenges in assessing microplastics in seafood by developing an improved protocol based on Raman spectroscopy and chemical treatment. The findings confirmed the presence of microplastics in shellfish and fish collected from Hong Kong waters, mainly consisting of polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, and poly(ethylene terephthalate). The developed method provides an improved alternative for routine monitoring of microplastics.

Determination of microplastics in the edible green-lipped mussel Perna viridis using an automated mapping technique of Raman microspectroscopy

Matthew Ming-Lok Leung et al.

Summary: Microplastics were found in green-lipped mussels collected from five mariculture sites in Hong Kong, with an average of 1.60-14.7 particles per mussel per site. It was estimated that the population in Hong Kong could ingest up to 10,380 pieces of microplastics per person per year through consumption of these contaminated mussels, indicating a potential human health risk in the region.

Personal Care and Cosmetic Products as a Potential Source of Environmental Contamination by Microplastics in a Densely Populated Asian City

Saidu M. Bashir et al.

Summary: The study reveals that PCCPs containing microbeads are still widely available for sale in Macao, with polyethylene (PE) being the most common type of microbeads. It estimates that over 37 billion microbeads per year may be released into the environment through wastewater treatment plants. The density of microplastics in coastal sediments varies and the fraction of < 1 mm particles is the most abundant, making up an average of 98.6% of the total.

Stabilization of Fragmental Polystyrene Nanoplastic by Natural Organic Matter: Insight into Mechanisms

Alice Pradel et al.

Summary: The addition of natural organic matter enhances the stability of nanoplastics, with different types exhibiting distinct stabilizing mechanisms. This highlights the importance of considering the properties of natural organic matter when assessing the behavior of nanoplastics in the environment.
