Performance and enhancement mechanism of redox mediator for nitrate removal in immobilized bioreactor with preponderant microbes

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: The study established an RM reactor with fixed AHAQ and three core strains, achieving high nitrate removal efficiency under low C/N and short HRT conditions. The reactor induced decorrelation tendencies between NRE and active extracellular organics, favored the stability of effluent organics and biological activities, and potentially enhanced electron transport activity. Despite deteriorated NRE in lower C/N, biological strategies were adapted to grow better and resist adverse conditions.

Reduction of antimony mobility from Sb-rich smelting slag by Shewanella oneidensis: Integrated biosorption and precipitation

Xiaocen Jia et al.

Summary: The study revealed that under reducing conditions, S. oneidensis can react with Fe(III) to dissolve antimony-rich smelting slag, immobilize released antimony, preferentially adsorb Sb(III), and reduce Sb(V) in aqueous solution. Additionally, the biological adsorption of antimony by S. oneidensis and the simultaneous chemical redox reaction of Sb-Fe were mediated by the presence of Fe(III). The co-precipitation of antimony with iron to form a secondary mineral was identified by EXAFS analysis, suggesting that S. oneidensis has a positive impact on immobilizing antimony and reducing its toxicity in anoxic environments, providing a theoretical basis for antimony contamination treatment.

Pulse electrocoagulation combined with a coagulant to remove antimony in wastewater

Wenjie Dong et al.

Summary: Pulse electrocoagulation (PEC) was used to treat synthetic solutions containing antimony. The study investigated the effects of electrode materials, distance between electrodes, duty ratio, current frequency, and initial pH on the removal efficiency. The results showed that the removal of Sb reached 93.5% under optimal conditions. Additionally, the addition of polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC) as a coagulant improved the removal effect.

Acceleration mechanism of bioavailable Fe(III) on Te(IV) bioreduction of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1: Promotion of electron generation, electron transfer and energy level

Yue He et al.

Summary: The addition of Fe(III) increased the bioreduction rate of Te(IV) and enhanced NADH production, cytochrome c levels, and extracellular polymeric substances secretion while reducing cell membrane permeability, subsequently reducing the toxicity of Te(IV) to cells. Additionally, Fe(III) also facilitated ATP production, providing energy for the metabolic process of Te(IV) bioreduction and playing a crucial role in cell activity. Zeta potential and FT-IR spectra indicated that the stability of TeNPs was improved by the presence of EPS, offering a promising strategy for enhancing the stability of TeNPs.

Application of a Spiral Symmetric Stream Anaerobic Bioreactor for treating saline heparin sodium pharmaceutical wastewater: Reactor operating characteristics, organics degradation pathway and salt tolerance mechanism

Qi Song et al.

Summary: In this study, a Spiral Symmetry Stream Anaerobic Bioreactor (SSSAB) was used to treat actual saline heparin sodium pharmaceutical wastewater (HSPW), achieving a COD removal rate of 82%, higher than other reactors at similar salinity. The main organic compounds in HSPW are benzenes, with the degradations of phenol and p-cresol as the major rate-limiting steps. The microbial community in anaerobic granular sludge (AGS) adapted to the HSPW treatment, demonstrating the superiority of the SSSAB structure.

A review of the environmental chemical behavior, detection and treatment of antimony

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: Antimony, a toxic metalloid element, is causing pollution issues due to its wide use and mining activities. The toxicity of antimony is closely related to its chemical form, with Sb(III) being more toxic than Sb(V). Antimony exists in various forms in the environment and is easily affected by environmental factors.

How can accumulated organics and salts deteriorate the biological treatment unit in the printing and dyeing wastewater recycling system?

Xin Jin et al.

Summary: The study showed that organic matter accumulation is crucial for the deterioration of a biological treatment system in a printing and dyeing wastewater recycling system, especially during the initial phase, while the subsequent accumulation of inorganic salts can exacerbate the situation.
