Communicating water availability to improve awareness and implementation of water conservation: A study of the 2018 and 2020 drought events in the Republic of Ireland

Sarpong Hammond Antwi et al.

Summary: This study examines public communication on water availability and water conservation measures implementation in the Republic of Ireland. Findings show that Irish newspapers had more coverage on drought and water availability in 2018 compared to 2020, with a prevalent frame of uncertainty and risk. Irish Water's engagement with the public on social media was limited, and there is a lack of a comprehensive national drought information management system and plan.

Current status of recycled water for agricultural irrigation in Australia, potential opportunities and areas of emerging concern

John C. Radcliffe

Summary: Three per cent of Australian agricultural irrigation comes from recycled water. The establishment of Environment Protection Authorities in the 1990s led to effluents from Wastewater Treatment Plants being used for agricultural irrigation. However, economic justifications have posed challenges in some regions for utilizing recycled water in agriculture.

Impacts of COVID-19 pandemic on the aquatic environment associated with disinfection byproducts and pharmaceuticals

Zhong Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the concentrations of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and COVID-19 related pharmaceuticals in waste-water effluents and surface water were measured before and after the lockdown in Wuhan. The study found that intensified disinfection during the COVID-19 pandemic had limited impacts on the occurrence of DBPs in the aquatic environment, but it led to a significant increase in concentrations of lopinavir and ritonavir. The research suggests the need for monitoring COVID-19 related pharmaceuticals and evaluating their ecotoxicities in the aquatic environment.

Effect of residual chlorine on the interaction between bacterial growth and assimilable organic carbon and biodegradable organic carbon in reclaimed water

Xueli Ren et al.

Summary: Reclaimed water can reduce household water consumption significantly, but microbial growth poses health and aesthetic concerns. AOC and BDOC are important indicators for evaluating biological stability of water. Results suggest that maintaining residual chlorine concentration is crucial in maintaining biological stability of reclaimed water, and controlling AOC level is vital for stabilizing reclaimed water.

Hazardous Gas Detection by Cavity-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy for Environmental Safety Monitoring

Pinyi Wang et al.

Summary: The efficiency of cavity-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (CERS) was demonstrated with a folded multipass cavity for detecting hazardous gases in the atmosphere. By optimizing the number of intracavity beams and designing cavity parameters, ppb-level Raman gas sensing for various explosive and toxic gases was achieved at atmospheric pressure within a short exposure time. The CERS apparatus offers simultaneous detection of multiple gases with ultrahigh sensitivity and selectivity, showing great potential for environmental safety monitoring.
