Various strategies applied for the removal of emerging micropollutant sulfamethazine: a systematic review

Sikandar I. Mulla et al.

Summary: Pharmaceutical active drug, particularly sulfamethazine (SMZ), is considered as a major emerging microcontaminant that can affect the development of antibacterial resistance genes due to its long-term presence in the environment. The widespread use of SMZ and its detection in various samples, including water, along with its toxic effects on microalgae and mice, has raised concerns. Therefore, further research is needed to investigate the removal and degradation of SMZ in wastewater treatment plants, including the use of engineered biological mediators.

Effects of oxytetracycline dihydrate and sulfamethoxazole onMicrocystis aeruginosaandChlamydomonas microsphaera

Xudong Zhou et al.

Summary: The increasing use of pharmaceuticals in China has raised concerns regarding their impact on aquatic organisms, particularly microalgae. This study examined the effects of oxytetracycline dihydrate (OXY) and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) on two species of algae, revealing concentration-dependent growth effects and higher sensitivity ofChlamydomonas microsphaerato both antibiotics. High concentrations of antibiotics led to cell membrane disintegration and significant changes in physiological parameters, suggesting the potential for increased algal blooms in eutrophic waters.

Amin Mojiri et al.

Summary: The study found that the marine diatom Chaetoceros muelleri is effective in removing certain antibiotics from water. It was observed that within a certain range, increasing antibiotic concentrations led to higher protein and carotenoid content, while cell viability remained relatively stable. However, at high antibiotic concentrations, these indicators decreased.

Effects of three antibiotics on growth and antioxidant response of Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Anabaena cylindrica

Xueqing Zhong et al.

Summary: Antibiotics are essential for treating bacterial infections and play important roles in aquaculture and animal husbandry, but the accumulation of antibiotics in water and soil poses global environmental risks due to excessive consumption and inadequate wastewater treatment. Toxicity studies on spiramycin, tigecycline, and amoxicillin towards Chlorella pyrenoidesa and Anabaena cylindrica reveal that the latter is more sensitive, with spiramycin and tigecycline exhibiting higher toxicity compared to amoxicillin. This research helps in assessing the ecological risks of these antibiotics on green microalgae and cyanobacteria.

Vesna Milanovic et al.

Summary: This study aimed to increase the knowledge of AR genes in a rearing chain of H. illucens larvae and their response to rearing substrates supplemented with different percentages of microalgae. The results showed a high prevalence of tetracycline resistance genes, with no significant effect of rearing substrates on the distribution of AR genes in the larvae. However, frass samples showed a significant accumulation of AR genes, particularly when larvae were reared on substrates with high percentages of I. galbana.

Carbon dots enhance the recovery of microalgae bioresources from wastewater containing amoxicillin

Zhenhao Zhao et al.

Summary: Carbon dots enhanced the photosynthetic activity of Chlorella under antibiotic stress, leading to a significant increase in specific growth rate, photosystems II activity, and antibiotic removal. The toxicity of residuals was eliminated, while the removal of nitrogen and phosphorous increased, as well as the production of pigments, lipids, and proteins. This study proposed a new strategy for coupling microalgal bioresource production and toxic wastewater purification using CDs.

Attenuation pathways of erythromycin and biochemical responses related to algal growth and lipid synthesis in a microalga-effluent system

Xiaotong Wang et al.

Summary: Microalgal cultivation in municipal wastewater treatment plants can couple wastewater treatment with microalgae energy utilization. However, residual antibiotics in effluents from WWTPs can affect the growth of microalgae. The study found that erythromycin attenuation in a microalga-effluent system was mainly due to hydrolysis, photolysis, and biodegradation, with the latter having the highest removal rate. Exposure to erythromycin led to biochemical responses in the microalgae, including a decrease in photosynthetic pigment content, an increase in ROS production, and changes in enzyme activities related to photosynthesis and lipid production.

Environmental risk analysis of pharmaceuticals on freshwater phytoplankton assemblage: effects on alpha, beta, and taxonomic diversity

Summary: Antibiotics and NSAIDs in the ecosystem can negatively impact phytoplankton diversity and taxonomic structure, with some groups like Cyanoprokaryotes being more sensitive. Hazard index calculations show a correlation between pharmaceutical pollution levels and decreased phytoplankton diversity. High beta diversity values in phytoplankton communities suggest the ability of microalgae to adapt to environmental conditions, with species difference driving the diversity rather than species replacement in highly polluted areas.
