Deep mantle structure and origin of Cenozoic intraplate volcanoes in Indochina, Hainan and South China Sea

Dapeng Zhao et al.

Summary: The study suggests that there are widespread low-Vp anomalies in the whole mantle beneath the Southeast Asian basalt province, possibly indicating the presence of a cluster of mantle plumes. The Hainan plume may be the strongest, but it is slowing down, and other mantle plumes beneath Cenozoic volcanoes in the region may be dying or already dead.

Seismic Imaging of an Intracrustal Deformation in the Northwestern Margin of the South China Sea: The Role of a Ductile Layer in the Crust

Haibo Huang et al.

Summary: The study used ocean bottom seismometer data to investigate the depth variations and geological structure of the continental crust in the South China Sea. The research suggests that deformation of the continental margin was controlled by a ductile crustal layer, with magmatism associated with early stage oceanic activity.

Widespread hydrothermal vents and associated volcanism record prolonged Cenozoic magmatism in the South China Sea

Fang Zhao et al.

Summary: The continental margin of the northern South China Sea is a magma-poor rifted margin. Extensive magmatic processes have reshaped this margin, leading to the presence of hydrothermal vent complexes and magmatic edifices such as volcanoes, igneous sills, and lava flows. The occurrence of hydrothermal vents close to the seafloor, along with evidence of shallow igneous sills, suggests ongoing fluid seepage and post-rift magmatism possibly linked to a mantle plume effect.

The deep mantle upwelling beneath the northwestern South China Sea: Insights from the time-varying residual subsidence in the Qiongdongnan Basin

Zhong-Xian Zhao

Summary: Deep hot mantle upwelling has been found around the Qiongdongnan Basin in the northwestern South China Sea margin. Detailed analysis of Cenozoic residual subsidence shows negative subsidence starting from 28.4 Ma, decreasing dramatically after 11.6 Ma. Different patterns of residual subsidence during syn-rift and post-rift periods suggest the influence of deep mantle upwelling on basin dynamics over a large time span.

Summary: Based on earthquake data, vertical gravity gradient data and high-resolution bathymetry, the research indicates that the Red Sea is a mature ocean basin where continuous seafloor spreading began along its entire length around 13 million years ago.
