Motile cilia genetics and cell biology: big results from little mice

Lance Lee et al.

Summary: Over the past two decades, our understanding of motile cilia and their role in disease has greatly increased, with critical information and insight coming from the analysis of mouse models. Mouse models have made significant contributions to genetic and cell biological studies of motile cilia, and have been at the forefront of research on mammalian motile cilia and PCD pathogenesis.

On being the right shape: Roles for motile cilia and cerebrospinal fluid flow in body and spine morphology

Elizabeth A. Bearce et al.

Summary: This review explores the central problem of how developing organisms attain their proper shape, focusing on the formation of the body axis and spine in vertebrates. Recent research in zebrafish has highlighted the role of motile cilia and cerebrospinal fluid flow in axial morphogenesis and spinal straightness. By investigating zebrafish mutants, researchers are gaining insight into human conditions like Idiopathic Scoliosis, shedding light on how body and spine shape are acquired and maintained through development and growth.

Diversity and function of motile ciliated cell types within ependymal lineages of the zebrafish brain

Percival P. D'Gama et al.

Summary: Through studying motile ciliated cells in zebrafish brain ventricles, it was found that the ventricles undergo restructuring during development from mono- to multiciliated cells, which generate directional flow patterns. These ciliated cells have different developmental origins and genetic heterogeneity, but do not affect overall brain or spine morphogenesis, only resulting in enlarged ventricles.

Cytokinetic abscission is part of the midblastula transition in early zebrafish embryogenesis

Shai Adar-Levor et al.

Summary: Animal cytokinesis ends with the formation of intercellular bridges that connect sibling cells, ultimately resolved by abscission. In early zebrafish development, delayed abscission leads to interconnected cell clusters during rapid division cycles, while acceleration of abscission occurs during the midblastula transition (MBT). Components of the ESCRT machinery enriched at intercellular bridges post-MBT suggest a role in driving abscission and influencing cell behavior coordination during embryonic development.
