Do detection-based warning strategies improve vehicle yielding behavior at uncontrolled midblock crosswalks?

Qinaat Hussain et al.

Summary: Pedestrians account for a large proportion of injuries and fatalities in road traffic crashes in the state of Qatar, particularly in areas with uncontrolled midblock crosswalks where improving drivers' alertness and yielding behavior is crucial. Results from the driving simulator study show that LED and VMS conditions can effectively increase yielding rates, reduce vehicle-pedestrian conflicts, and motivate drivers to reduce speed in advance.

A novel agent-based framework for evaluating pedestrian safety at unsignalized mid-block crosswalks

Hong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel agent-based framework for evaluating pedestrian safety at unsignalized crosswalks, taking into account behavioral elements such as reaction time, visual obstacles, and safety margin time. The framework shows promising results in reproducing reliable distributions of post encroachment time and sensitivity analysis reveals factors that increase the probability of serious conflicts.

Summary: The study found that drivers in unmarked crosswalk areas yield at about half the rate of drivers in marked crosswalk areas. Analysis showed that pedestrian behavior in encounter conflicts and driver behavior in potential, slight, and serious conflicts are the main factors in preventing collisions.
