Changes in mechanical properties and fracture behaviors of heated marble subjected to liquid nitrogen cooling

Shanjie Su et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of LN2 cooling on the damage behavior of hot dry rock (HDR) by conducting physical and mechanical experiments on marble samples. It is found that LN2 cooling increases the porosity of the marble, while decreasing the P-wave velocity, compression strength, and elastic modulus. The complexity of fracture behavior also increases under uniaxial compression.

ON ESTIMATING PLASTIC ZONES AND PROPAGATION ANGLES FOR MIXED MODE I/II CRACKS CONSIDERING FRACTAL EFFECT

Xin Liang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of the fractal dimension of a mixed mode I/II crack on its near-tip plastic zones and propagation angles. It proposes a modified criterion to predict the crack propagation direction and discusses the effects of fractal dimension on the crack propagation angles. The results highlight the importance of the fractal dimension in evaluating the crack-tip plastic zones and predicting the crack propagation angle.

Mechanical damage mechanism of frozen coal subjected to liquid nitrogen freezing

Lei Qin et al.

Summary: Cracking low-permeability coal seams with anhydrous liquid nitrogen can enhance coalbed methane extraction efficiency, but freezing variables significantly affect the mechanical properties of coal, with an increase in freezing cycles leading to a decrease in mechanical strength.

Effect of liquid nitrogen cooling on mechanical characteristics and fracture morphology of layer coal under Brazilian splitting test

Peng Hou et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of liquid nitrogen cooling on the internal structure of coal and the mechanical properties and fracture morphology of bedding coal were investigated. The results showed that LN2 cooling damaged the micro-structure of coal and reduced its mechanical properties, with the degree of weakening dependent on the bedding direction. Additionally, LN2 cooling increased the ductility of coal and induced longer and more complex fractures.

Experimental Study on Temperature Response of Different Ranks of Coal to Liquid Nitrogen Soaking

Shumin Liu et al.

Summary: The temperature curves of coal samples under liquid nitrogen soaking can be divided into accelerated cooling stage, decelerated cooling stage, and maintained low-temperature stage. With an increase in soaking times, the time required to reach the low-temperature stage gradually shortens. The heating/cooling speed follows a logarithmic function, and the order of absolute values is lignite > bituminite > anthracite.

Effect of liquid nitrogen freeze-thaw cycle on fracture toughness and release rate of saturated sandstone

Peng Hou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of LN2 freeze-thaw cycles on the fracture toughness and energy-release rate of saturated sandstone. The experimental results show that LN2 freeze-thaw cycles can promote the generation of microcracks inside the sandstone, leading to an increase in surface roughness of cracks post-loading. As the freeze-thaw cycle times increase, both fracture toughness and energy-release rate gradually decrease.

The influences of super-critical CO2 saturation on tensile characteristics and failure modes of shales

Yiyu Lu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that saturation with Sc-CO2 had a negative impact on the tensile properties of shale, leading to a decrease in Brazilian splitting strength and modulus, as well as a shift in failure mode from single tensile to tensile-shear mixed failure. The weakening of carbonate cementation made bedding planes more prone to damage, and the increase in porosity caused by calcite dissolution and organic matter extraction was identified as the fundamental reason for the deterioration of shale tensile properties.

A FRACTAL PERSPECTIVE ON FRACTURE INITIATION AND PROPAGATION OF RESERVOIR ROCKS UNDER WATER AND NITROGEN FRACTURING

Xin Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fractal characteristics of crack propagation in hydraulic fracturing and the impact of fractal dimension of induced fractures on rock breakdown pressure. The results showed that N-2 fracturing can lower the rock breakdown pressure and induce more tortuous macro-fractures. The study suggests that crack fractal dimension is an important factor that should be considered in designing fracturing operations.

Peng Hou et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed and simulated the 3D pore-fracture system of tight rock to investigate the effects of micro-fracture morphology and gas rarefaction effect on gas flow and permeability. The results show that gas flow behavior is influenced by these factors, with the pore-fracture structure being more sensitive at low-pressure conditions.

Peng Hou et al.

Summary: Quantitative characterization of shale gas flow in fractured shale is essential in shale gas extraction. This study reconstructed 3D multi-scale structures in fractured shale using various techniques and analyzed the effects of fracture complexity and gas pressure on shale gas flow quantitatively. The results showed that fracture morphology and gas pressure greatly influenced gas flow behavior in fractured shale.
