On fracture and damage evolution modelling of fissure-hole containing granite induced by multistage constant-amplitude variable-frequency cyclic loads

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the damage evolution characteristics of fissure-holes containing rock under multistage cyclic loads. The results indicate that the peak strength and fatigue lifetime increase with the fissure angle. However, the volumetric deformation, AE activities, and crack network scale are maximized for a 50 degrees fissure angle. A damage evolution model based on AE rate is proposed, and an inverted S-shaped curve reflects the damage propagation behavior. Additionally, the internal crack network reveals crack coalescence and hole spalling behaviors, with three identified rock bridge coalescence modes.

Macro-meso failure characteristics of circular cavity-contained granite under unconventional cyclic loads: A lab-scale testing

Y. Wang et al.

Summary: The cavity orientation affects the lifetime, strength, deformation, damping ratio, and failure modes of rocks, with higher cavity orientation leading to faster damage propagation and lower AE b-value, volumetric strain, and damping ratio. Shear failure is more likely to occur in rocks with high cavity orientation, highlighting the importance of cavity orientation in rock failure analysis.

Effect of rock bridge length on fracture and damage modelling in granite containing hole and fissures under cyclic uniaxial increasing-amplitude decreasing-frequency (CUIADF) loads

Y. Wang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigated the fatigue strength, deformation, AE output activities, damage propagation, and crack coalescence of granite samples under CUIADF loading. Results showed that the fatigue strength, volumetric deformation, and fatigue lifetime increased with increasing rock bridge length. The AE-b value decreased with the cyclic number and was relatively large for rock with high rock bridge length. A new damage variable and an inverted S-shaped damage evolution model were proposed to describe rock damage propagation. Three failure modes were revealed from the reconstructed CT images. It was suggested that the rock bridge length significantly impacted rock instability, and the interactions between the hole and fissure were weakest for a sample with long rock bridge.

Macro-meso failure behavior of pre-flawed hollow-cylinder granite under multi-level cyclic loads: Insights from acoustic emission and post-test CT scanning

Y. Wang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that communication between the crack network and holes controls the volumetric deformation and final failure modes of the rock. Rock with low flaw angle shows more severe progressive crack unstable propagation. The b value of AE activities exhibits a specific pattern of increase and decrease.

Acoustic emission monitoring of mode I fracture toughness tests on sandstone rocks

Andrea Munoz-Ibanez et al.

Summary: A series of mode I fracture toughness tests were conducted using SCB and pCT methodologies on sandstone samples, with concurrent monitoring of AE activity. Results suggest that the pCT method provides more comprehensive and detailed information compared to the SCB method, allowing for better evaluation of crack modes and fracture processes.

A strain-based fatigue damage model for naturally fractured marble subjected to freeze-thaw and uniaxial cyclic loads

Y. Wang et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the fatigue damage evolution of rock caused by volumetric deformation from freeze-thaw and cyclic loads, as well as the influence of natural fractures on rock damage characteristics. Experimental results show that frost heaving force acting on natural fractures leads to volume changes in rock, and the damage variable expressed by volumetric strain has a linear relationship with freeze-thaw cycles. Marble exposed to cyclic loads exhibits a two-stage pattern in axial, lateral, and volumetric strain.

The material-structure duality of rock mass: Insight from numerical modeling

Gen Li et al.

Summary: The study constructed a unified numerical scheme (Rock failure and instability analysis, RFIA) considering both material failure and structural instability of rock mass. By establishing the statistical meso-damage constitutive model and developing the finite deformation numerical formation, the synchronous simulation of material failure induced instability and structural instability induced failure of rock mass was achieved. The cooperative effect of material-structure is an important mechanism, which may lead to large displacement and rotation of rock mass and sudden release of massive energy during failure and instability process of rock.

Yubai Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of freeze-thaw weathering on the strength of Huashan granite through freeze-thaw cycle tests. Results showed that frost heave failure is the main mechanism causing the decrease in strength. Radial restraint of confining pressure was found to effectively increase peak stress in the material.

Summary: This study investigates the fracture evolution and energy characteristics of marble under fatigue cyclic loading and confining pressure unloading conditions, showing that the damage accumulation during fatigue loading stage influences the final failure mode and energy conversion. The post-test CT scanning reveals the effects of fatigue cycles on crack pattern and scale after FC-CPU testing, providing insight into the energy changes during the process.
