Thixotropy, nonmonotonic stress relaxation, and the second law of thermodynamics

Yogesh M. Joshi

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of the elastic modulus and stress changes over time in thixoviscoelastic materials. By analyzing a structural kinetic model, the phenomenon of viscoelastic aging and rejuvenation is observed, and it is shown that this form does not violate the second law of thermodynamics. Moreover, the proposed simple formalism successfully predicts the nonmonotonic stress relaxation observed experimentally.

Shear-banding fluid(s) under time-dependent shear flows. Part I: Spatiotemporal dynamics

Alice Briole et al.

Summary: In this study, the response of semidilute shear-banding wormlike micelles to time-dependent flow protocols was reported. It was shown that the onset of banding is delayed and transients are longer when stress is used as a control parameter, and the way the banding structure is built up strongly depends on the control parameter. Additionally, secondary flows develop on top of the shear-banding instability in both cases, leading to different dynamics in the flow structure.

Shear-banding fluid(s) under time-dependent shear flows. Part II: A test of the Moorcroft-Fielding criteria

Alice Briole et al.

Summary: Complex systems often exhibit shear banding, where two different states coexist, characterized by internal structuring and local shear rates. Moorcroft and Fielding proposed general criteria for the onset of banding in time-dependent flows of complex systems, which are based on the time evolution of the bulk rheological response function of the system and associated with a specific signature in the mechanical response. The study found that wall slip seems to be closely related to banding regardless of the flow protocol or the system.

Onset of transient shear banding in viscoelastic shear start-up flows: Implications from linearized dynamics

Shweta Sharma et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the transient dynamics of viscoelastic flows during shear start-up, focusing on the onset of shear banding using different models and methods. The results suggest that there is no universal connection between the overshoot and subsequent decay of shear stress and the unstable eigenvalues obtained from stability analysis, making it difficult to predict transient shear banding based solely on shear stress behavior. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of considering factors that may affect the transient phenomena observed during shear start-up.

Stress Overshoots in Simple Yield Stress Fluids

Summary: Soft glassy materials undergo solid-to-liquid transition under external shear, often exhibiting stress overshoot. This phenomenon can be predicted by a continuum model and is closely related to the nucleation and growth dynamics of the fluidized region.

Summary: Yield stress fluids display a dual nature where they exhibit solid or liquid properties depending on the imposed stress, with a transition characterized by stress overshoot and subsequent relaxation. The complex spatiotemporal dynamics of shear-induced yielding in YSFs can be summarized into short-term response and stress relaxation stages.
