Reappraisal of SMAP inversion algorithms for soil moisture and vegetation optical depth

Lun Gao et al.

Summary: NASA's SMAP satellite mission has been providing global estimates of soil moisture and vegetation optical depth since 2015 using L-band radiometry. Various retrieval algorithms have been developed, and this study evaluates their performance across different biomes, climates, and terrain slopes. The study found that some algorithms, such as SCA-V and RDCA, outperform others in terms of temporal correlation with in-situ measurements.

ASCAT IB: A radar-based vegetation optical depth retrieved from the ASCAT scatterometer satellite

Xiangzhuo Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a new IB VOD product was developed based on ASCAT data, showing superior performance in capturing spatial patterns of aboveground biomass and tree height compared to other VOD products. IB VOD also exhibited strong temporal correlations with deciduous broadleaf forests, woody savannas, and savannas.

Evaluation of six satellite- and model-based surface soil temperature datasets using global ground-based observations

Hongliang Ma et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated six model-and satellite-based surface soil temperature (ST) products using ground observations, with GEOS-5 showing the best performance and ERA5 showing improvements compared to ERA-Interim. Model-based ST products generally underestimate ground ST, with biases increasing with soil temperature and moisture, especially in certain climate zones and elevations.

A first assessment of satellite and reanalysis estimates of surface and root-zone soil moisture over the permafrost region of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Zanpin Xing et al.

Summary: Long-term and high-quality surface soil moisture (SSM) and root-zone soil moisture (RZSM) data are crucial for understanding the land-atmosphere interactions of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). This study evaluated a range of satellite and reanalysis estimates of SSM and RZSM in the thawed soil overlaying permafrost in the QTP, showing that ESA CCI, SMAP-L4, and SMOS-IC SSM products outperformed others, while SMAP-L4 and GLDAS-Noah RZSM products performed better than ERAS-Land.

Generating surface soil moisture at 30 m spatial resolution using both data fusion and machine learning toward better water resources management at the field scale

Ahmed Samir Abowarda et al.

Summary: Soil moisture products from passive microwave remote sensing have low spatial resolution, while active sensors can provide higher resolution but lower temporal resolution. This study used data fusion and random forest models to generate continuous surface soil moisture estimates at 30 m x 30 m, improving accuracy and spatial distribution.

Global-scale assessment and inter-comparison of recently developed/reprocessed microwave satellite vegetation optical depth products

Xiaojun Li et al.

Summary: The vegetation optical depth (VOD) is a vegetation index related to microwave extinction effects within the vegetation canopy layer, increasingly used for ecological applications. Different VOD products show varying abilities in monitoring vegetation features, depending on algorithms and satellite frequencies. VOD sensitivity increases with frequency, offering capacities to monitor seasonal changes of vegetation components and biomass.

Fusing simulated GEDI, ICESat-2 and NISAR data for regional aboveground biomass mapping

Carlos Alberto Silva et al.

Summary: This study presents a multi-sensor data fusion approach for accurate mapping of forest aboveground biomass (AGB) using data from GEDI, ICESat-2, and NISAR missions. Testing in Sonoma County, USA, demonstrates that the fusion framework provides more accurate AGB estimates compared to individual mission data, highlighting opportunities for improved AGB mapping through data fusion.

An alternative AMSR2 vegetation optical depth for monitoring vegetation at large scales

Mengjia Wang et al.

Summary: A new retrieval approach for X-VOD based on AMSR2 observations at X-band was proposed and evaluated in this study to overcome the challenge of retrieving VOD from X-band observations. By calibrating model parameters and comparing with other X-VOD products, the results showed that the proposed method had competitive advantages in terms of spatial and temporal performances.
