A freeze-thaw PVA hydrogel loaded with guava leaf extract: physical and antibacterial properties

William Xaveriano Waresindo et al.

Summary: The study successfully fabricated a polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel containing guava leaf extract, adjusting its physical properties by varying the extract concentration. Addition of the extract decreased cross-linking and increased pore size of the hydrogel, leading to increased swelling and decreased mechanical strength. Increasing extract concentration widened absorbance peaks in FTIR, indicating hydrogen bond formation, and transformed the crystalline phase into an amorphous phase based on XRD spectra. The PVA/GLE hydrogel showed increased antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Polyphenol-mediated chitin self-assembly for constructing a fully naturally resourced hydrogel with high strength and toughness

Xinghuan Lin et al.

Summary: A polyphenol-mediated self-assembly strategy was developed to enhance the strength and toughness of chitin hydrogels. These hydrogels showed high modulus and strength, while sacrificing bonds dissipated energy and led to high toughness. The hydrogels exhibited considerable antibacterial properties and excellent biocompatibility.
