Investigation of PAHs, nitrated PAHs and oxygenated PAHs in PM10 urban aerosols. A comprehensive data analysis

Sonia Lara et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in particulate matter contribute significantly to air pollution health risks. The author has optimized a method to determine the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitrated and oxygenated PAHs in samples of PM10 particulate matter. Analysis of real samples collected in Ciudad Real, Spain shows higher PAH levels in the cold season, with traffic being the main pollution source.

Application of individual response factors for accurate quantitation of alkylated PAH homologs in complex environmental samples using gas chromatography/triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS)

Puspa L. Adhikari et al.

Summary: Alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (alkyl PAHs) are more toxic and persistent than non-alkylated parent PAH compounds, posing a greater threat to environmental quality. The lack of reliable analytical methods for quantifying alkyl PAHs has hindered their inclusion as priority pollutants by the US EPA. This study demonstrates that using relative response factors of parent PAHs to quantify alkylated PAH isomers can lead to underestimation of alkyl PAHs, particularly in MRM-based analyses.

Environmental analysis of polar and non-polar Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds in airborne particulate matter, settled dust and soot: Part II: Instrumental analysis and occurrence

Mathieu Galmiche et al.

Summary: Interests in PAHs and their derivatives have been growing due to their toxicity. This review focuses on the separation and detection of PACs, with chromatography and mass spectrometry playing crucial roles in identifying and quantifying these compounds. Detection of PACs in environmental samples at ultratrace levels is possible with the sensitivity and specificity of mass spectrometry.

Seasonal variations, gas-PM2.5 partitioning and long-distance input of PM2.5-bound and gas-phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Shanghai, China

Jinpu Jia et al.

Summary: The study investigated the concentrations of 16 PAHs in the atmosphere in Shanghai during different seasons, showing significant variations between PM2.5-bound and gas-phase concentrations. PMF analysis identified prominent sources including coke and coal combustion, traffic emissions, and biomass combustion. The study also highlighted the impact of atmospheric pollutants from northern China on Shanghai in spring and winter.
