Accuracy of the ultrasound attenuation coefficient for the evaluation of hepatic steatosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies

Jong Keon Jang et al.

Summary: Accurate detection and quantification of hepatic steatosis are crucial for managing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. In this study, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the accuracy of ultrasound-measured attenuation coefficient (AC) in evaluating hepatic steatosis. The results showed that AC has good diagnostic performance for assessing hepatic steatosis. However, the interpretation of results should take into account factors such as body mass index (BMI) and the prevalence of steatosis or significant fibrosis.

Accuracy of Two-Dimensional Shear Wave Elastography and Attenuation Imaging for Evaluation of Patients With Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis

Dong Ho Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, a multiparametric approach using attenuation imaging and 2D-SWE was evaluated for the detection of steatosis and fibrosis in NAFLD patients. The attenuation coefficient was associated with steatosis grade, liver stiffness with fibrosis stage, and SWDS with lobular inflammation. A risk scoring system based on these parameters showed high accuracy in identifying patients with steatohepatitis.

Elastography for Pediatric Chronic Liver Disease: A Review and Expert Opinion

Giovanna Ferraioli et al.

Summary: In adults with chronic liver diseases, ultrasound and magnetic resonance shear wave elastography (SWE) can be used instead of liver biopsy in several clinical scenarios. While guidelines for the adult population exist, there is limited research on the use of SWE in pediatric chronic liver diseases, with no specific guidelines available. This article reviews the literature on SWE for pediatric chronic liver diseases and offers expert advice on its use in pediatric populations.

Summary: The study found that using PDFF-MRI histogram analysis for ex vivo volumetric quantification is an effective method to detect hepatic steatosis before liver transplantation, with median PDFF being the best predictor of MHS presence and entropy showing promising potential for use as a parameter.

Magnetic resonance imaging-derived proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) is a viable alternative to liver biopsy for steatosis quantification in living liver donor transplantation

Qiaochu Qi et al.

Summary: This study found that MRI-PDFF reliably predicts outcomes for both living liver donors and recipients. Liver regeneration in living donors and post-surgical outcomes in recipients were not significantly associated with the severity of hepatic steatosis.

Clinical use of shear-wave elastography for detecting liver fibrosis in children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis

Summary: The study introduced SWE technology to aid in detecting liver fibrosis in children with CF, finding that 6-MHz point SWE correlated with MR elastography, and SWE at 1.84 m/s could effectively differentiate the severity of liver stiffness, providing a tool for predicting liver fibrosis.
