The Potential of Bison Restoration as an Ecological Approach to Future Tribal Food Sovereignty on the Northern Great Plains

Hila Shamon et al.

Summary: Future climate projections suggest that traditional agricultural practices in the Northern Great Plains will become less sustainable due to warming, drying, and increased weather variability. This will especially impact Native American communities and their livelihoods. Restoring North American Plains bison to tribal lands could provide ecological and socio-economic benefits to underserved communities and improve their resilience to a changing climate.

Demographic performance of a large herbivore: effects of winter nutrition and weather

Nathan J. Jackson et al.

Summary: Variation in demographic rates within a population is influenced by the energy allocation to different life history strategies by individuals. For species with slow-paced life histories, energy allocation often prioritizes adult survival over reproduction, maximizing future reproductive potential. Factors such as weather and food availability can directly or indirectly affect population dynamics and survival rates. Experimental manipulations showed that winter nutrition can impact juvenile survival, while deep winter snow can decrease the survival of adult females, leading to population decline.

Climate change, not human population growth, correlates with Late Quaternary megafauna declines in North America

Summary: Research suggests that the disappearance of North American megafauna may be more closely related to climate change than human overhunting. There is no evidence of a persistent relationship between human and megafauna population levels over time.

Challenges and opportunities for cross-jurisdictional bison conservation in North America

Liba Pejchar et al.

Summary: Restoring free-roaming bison faces challenges of real and perceived wildlife-human conflicts, as well as political will, social acceptability, and management across jurisdictional boundaries. Most experts support a future with fenced and free-roaming herds, viewing bison as wildlife and cultural animals.

Determining the influence of snow and temperature on the movement rates of wood bison (Bison bison athabascae)

A. H. C. Sheppard et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of cumulative snow depth and temperature on wood bison movement using GPS-collar data, finding that both factors had significant impacts on movement rates. The results contribute to a better understanding of the winter movement ecology of wood bison and aid in their conservation efforts.

Phylogeny of Late Pleistocene and Holocene Bison species in Europe and North America

Lars Zver et al.

Summary: Amid uncertainty about the phylogeny of Bison species, genetic data has greatly improved our understanding of Late Pleistocene and Holocene bison. Recent phylogenetic studies have revealed new insights into how Bison bison evolved in North America, the ancestors of Bison bonasus in Europe, and the introgression of Bos mitochondrial DNA into extant Bison bonasus.

Forum: A Change in the Ecological Understanding of Rangelands in the Great Basin and Intermountain West and Implications for Management: Revisiting Mack and Thompson (1982)

Barry L. Perryman et al.

Summary: Reevaluating assumptions about the ecology and management of sagebrush and salt desert shrub systems in the Great Basin and Intermountain West is a proper role for science. Understanding and reckoning this complexity is vital to the future existence of these rangeland systems. Our thesis asserts that previous ecological claims are oversimplified and need a more comprehensive interpretation.

Vulnerability assessment of the multi-sector North American bison Bison bison management system to climate change

Jeff M. Martin et al.

Summary: The North American bison population of approximately 400,000 is maintained by a self-assembled bison management system (BMS) involving various stakeholders. The public/NGO and private sectors differ in adaptive capacity but collaborate closely in exchanging bison. Shared environmental values and attitudes between the sectors shape a foundation for enhanced collaboration within the multi-sector BMS, leading to the potential formation of a 'bison coalition' to address climate change.
