Glacier response to Holocene warmth inferred from in situ 10Be and 14C bedrock analyses in Steingletscher's forefield (central Swiss Alps)

Irene Schimmelpfennig et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the fluctuations of mid-latitude mountain glaciers and their relationship with local summer temperature changes. The researchers reconstruct the millennial recession and advance periods of the Steingletscher glacier in the European Alps during the Holocene. The findings suggest that glaciers in the region were similar to or even smaller than their current extent for most of the early and mid-Holocene, indicating that the summer temperatures during that time were similar to those at the end of the 20th century. However, due to the accelerating anthropogenic warming, glaciers in the Alps are currently far from equilibrium, making a simple comparison between modern and paleo-glacier sizes challenging.

Impact of the Agulhas Return Current on the oceanography of the Kerguelen Plateau region, Southern Ocean, over the last 40 kyrs

M. Civel-Mazens et al.

Summary: The oceanography of the western Indian sector of the Southern Ocean is complex due to the presence of subantarctic islands and plateaus. New sea-surface and sub-surface temperature data from cores covering the last 40,000 years reveal past oceanographic changes in the Kerguelen Islands region. The study suggests that surface conditions in the Subantarctic Zone of the Kerguelen Islands are influenced by the migration of Southern Ocean hydrological fronts and the Agulhas (Return) Current.

Evolution of the Cook Ice Cap (Kerguelen Islands) between the last centuries and 2100 ce based on cosmogenic dating and glacio-climatic modelling

Deborah Verfaillie et al.

Summary: This research delved into the historical evolution and potential future changes of the Cook Ice Cap on the sub-Antarctic Kerguelen Islands, revealing that the glacier's changes over the centuries have been influenced by climate conditions like the Southern Annular Mode. Future simulations suggest a complete disappearance of the Cook Ice Cap by the end of the century, although there are significant uncertainties involved.

Long-term demise of sub-Antarctic glaciers modulated by the Southern Hemisphere Westerlies

Jostein Bakke et al.

Summary: The accelerated melting of ice on the Antarctic Peninsula and sub-Antarctic islands indicates the cryosphere is approaching an irreversible tipping point. Research on South Georgia Island reveals that glaciers have been gradually retreating since the Antarctic cold reversal, with a link to summer insolation at 55°S and multi-decadal to centennial climate shifts causing at least nine glacier readvances in the past 10.5 ka.

Cosmogenic Exposure Dating (36Cl) of Landforms on Jan Mayen, North Atlantic, and the Effects of Bedrock Formation Age Assumptions on 36Cl Ages

Johanna Anjar et al.

Summary: The study of 89 Cl-36 dates on Jan Mayen revealed the need for updates in exposure age calculations due to young exposure ages, young rock formation age, and high native Cl contents. The results provided good evidence against equilibrium assumptions, with the most reliable ages being considered as the nonequilibrium ages on the island. Large-scale deglaciation on the south and central, lower-lying parts of the island was found to have started around 20 ka and lasted until about 7 ka.

A debris-covered glacier at Kerguelen (49 degrees S, 69 degrees E) over the past 15 000 years

Joanna Charton et al.

Summary: Debris-covered glaciers in the sub-Antarctic Kerguelen Archipelago have shown responses to multi-millennial climate variability, with at least two glacial advances observed during different periods. Both debris-covered and debris-free glaciers advanced synchronously during the Late Glacial, but a distinct advance in the debris-covered Gentil Glacier during the Late Holocene suggests unique dynamics or sensitivity to precipitation changes.
