The structure of natural biogenic iron (oxyhydr)oxides formed in circumneutral pH environments

Andrew H. Whitaker et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structure of biogenic iron (Fe) (oxyhydr)oxides and found that they are structurally distinct and more disordered than two-line ferrihydrite (2LFh). The poorly ordered biogenic iron (Fe) (oxyhydr)oxides were intimately mixed with organic matter and exhibited reduced crystallinity compared to 2LFh. Factors such as domain size and incorporation of impurities contributed to the differences in structure between biogenic iron (Fe) (oxyhydr)oxides and 2LFh.

Conservation and trade of the endangered Hypancistrus zebra (Siluriformes, Loricariidae), one of the most trafficked Brazilian fish

Leandro Melo de Sousa et al.

Summary: The zebra pleco, a small sucker-mouth catfish from the Xingu River in Brazil, is facing threats from habitat modification and overfishing. Despite being a highly sought-after ornamental species, little is known about its supply chains and conservation status globally. Research shows that while most aquarists are aware of the zebra pleco's endangered status, they have less awareness of the risks of buying wild-caught specimens. Captive breeding has been successful worldwide, suggesting the need for regulated local breeding facilities in Brazil for conservation efforts.
