Associations between ayahuasca consumption in naturalistic settings and current alcohol and drug use: Results of a large international cross-sectional survey

Daniel Perkins et al.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that consuming ayahuasca in naturalistic settings is associated with lower self-reported current consumption of alcohol and other drugs, especially for those with prior substance use disorders. This association remains significant even after adjusting for religious or social group effects.

Effects of 5-HT2A receptor agonist 2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine on alcohol consumption in Long-Evans rats

Michael D. Berquist et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of DOI or naltrexone on alcohol consumption in rats and found that DOI dose-dependently reduced alcohol intake and preference, while naltrexone had a less consistent effect. Quartile analyses showed that rats with higher initial alcohol intake had greater reductions in alcohol consumption and preference after DOI treatment. This suggests a potential 'baseline dependency' in effectiveness of psychedelics on alcohol consumption, with high-risk individuals possibly being more responsive to treatment targeting the 5-HT2 receptor family.
