Fully resolved coupled solid-fluid simulations of shock interaction with a layer of deformable aluminum particles

J. St Clair et al.

Summary: This study describes particle-resolved simulations of a single aluminum particle interacting with a strong nitromethane shock within a layer of particles. The results show that the presence of neighboring particles influences the shape, plastic deformation, and strength of shock reflection of the particles.

Problems of Detonation Wave Suppression in Hydrogen-Air Mixtures by Clouds of Inert Particles in One- and Two-dimensional Formulation

D. A. Tropin et al.

Summary: The study proposed physical and mathematical models describing detonation processes in hydrogen-air mixture, based on detailed and reduced kinetics models in one- and two-dimensional formulation. It calculated the interaction of detonation waves with inert particles and revealed types of detonation flows in gas suspension, obtaining volume concentrations and particle diameters causing detonation wave failure. Comparison between one-dimensional and two-dimensional approaches showed quantitative similarity in detonation wave velocity and values causing detonation failure.

Thermocouple Temperature Measurements in Metalized Explosive Fireballs

David L. Frost et al.

Summary: The study investigates the non-uniform distribution of gas temperature in metalized explosive fireballs and demonstrates the use of thermocouples for in-situ temperature measurements. The results show the impact of different particle types on the temperature within the fireball, with inert particles acting as heat sinks.

Mesoscale study on the shock response and initiation behavior of Al-PTFE granular composites

Le Tang et al.

Summary: The shock response and shock-induced initiation behavior of aluminum-polytetrafluoroethylene (Al-PTFE) granular composites were studied using a combination of mesoscale simulations and explosive loading experiments. A two-dimensional model was developed to investigate the effect of Al mass fractions on shock characteristics, revealing noticeable differences in pressure, temperature, and strain response. The interaction of shock wave with mesoscale heterogeneities plays a key role in the stochastic nature of the initiation process.

A hybrid Eulerian-Eulerian/Eulerian-Lagrangian method for dense-to-dilute dispersed phase flows

Achyut Panchal et al.

Summary: A hybrid EE-EL formulation is developed in this work for accurate and efficient computational modeling involving a transition between dense and dilute dispersed phase regimes. A smooth and dynamic transition criterion and conversion algorithm enable smooth transition between the two representations of the dispersed phase. The method's ability to dynamically transition from EE to EL and vice versa is evaluated in numerical tests and simulations.
