Quid pro quo in online medical consultation? Investigating the effects of small monetary gifts from patients

Wei Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of small gifts from patients on the quality of medical service and finds that doctors who receive gifts reciprocate by providing more timely responses and greater emotional support to the gift-givers. However, they may be slower in responding to nongivers and offer them less emotional support. These effects may vary depending on doctors' backgrounds. The findings have implications for patients, online medical consultation platforms, and healthcare policy makers.

Minimizing conditional value-at-risk under a modified basestock policy

Bo Li et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the inventory management problem for a single-product company and proposes an appropriate basestock selection strategy based on modeling the demand and unit production time. By minimizing the annual cost, a closed-form approximation of the optimal basestock is derived. Experimental results demonstrate the accuracy and feasibility of the approximation, and several predictive indicators for adjusting the basestock strategy are analyzed. The research has been successfully applied in a Fortune 10 energy company.

Socialize More, Pay Less: Randomized Field Experiments on Social Pricing

Haibing Gao et al.

Summary: Social pricing is a novel pricing framework that allows price differentiation based on consumers' social value. It has been found effective in increasing profits for online retailers, not only with new customers but also with existing ones. Perceived engagement and social cost are identified as the key drivers, leading to increased purchasing frequency and higher order value. Varying social interactions based on heterogeneity in consumers' purchasing frequencies further enhances the benefits of social pricing.

Mariia Petryk et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of network positions on performance rating scores in real-time performance feedback systems. The findings suggest that an individual's positional embeddedness is positively associated with the rating score they give to others, while their structural embeddedness is negatively associated with the rating score. The study also uncovers the moderating effects of anonymity, hierarchy, and sentiment of textual comments on the role of network embeddedness.

Does Congestion Always Hurt? Managing Discount Under Congestion in a Game-Theoretic Setting

Rajib L. Saha et al.

Summary: This study examines the dynamic relationship between buyer's procurement of cloud capacity and seller's pricing, focusing on how congestion affects discounts and purchasing decisions. It is found that even when end users are more sensitive to congestion, demand for cloud services can sometimes increase, leading to a decrease in discounts offered by the seller.

The Role of Expectation-Reality Discrepancy in Service Contracts

Xuying Zhao et al.

Summary: Research shows that service providers' contract strategies are determined by expectation-reality discrepancy (ERD) rather than true service valuations. Providers with higher ERDs are more likely to enforce contracts, intensifying competition in the market. Switching costs can help consumers avoid making wrong switching decisions due to misleading ERDs.
