Hydrologic characteristics and nitrogen removal performance by different formulated soil medium of bioretention system

Gongduan Fan et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing silt content and adding modifiers can significantly reduce infiltration rate, water retention volume, and nitrogen leaching risk. Moderate silt content (10%) showed excellent NO3-N removal efficiency (71.6% +/- 19.8%). The high-efficiency soil improver AC can be reasonably used in practical projects. Moreover, capillary/non-capillary hydrophobicity of formulated soil may be an important indicator for assessing nitrogen removal performance.

Removal of Cd (II) Ions from Bioretention System by Clay and Soil Wettability

Tong Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that silane-modified OFS-L clay and soil produced wettable surfaces, facilitating the removal of Cd (II), while OFS-B exhibited hydrophobic properties. The modified clay had superior Cd (II) removal capacity compared to the original clay, with OFS-L showing better removal effectiveness than OFS-B.

Conventional bioretention column with Fe-hydrochar for stormwater treatment: Nitrogen removal, nitrogen behaviour and microbial community analysis

Fen Wang et al.

Summary: The Fe-hydrochar was found to effectively remove nitrogen from synthetic stormwater in a bioretention column, mainly through microbial nitrification and denitrification processes. The organic matter released by the Fe-hydrochar was utilized as a carbon source for denitrification, with different bacteria playing specific roles in nitrogen removal.

Bioretention systems for stormwater management: Recent advances and future prospects

Kuppusamy Vijayaraghavan et al.

Summary: Bioretention is a popular stormwater management strategy used in urban environments to combat water quality and hydrological impacts of stormwater. Most research contributions come from a few countries and research groups, leading to operational failures in diverse geographical locations. Future research needs to consider bioretention design in different climates and address current technical challenges.
