Remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil by combined chemical reduction and microbial stabilization: The role of biogas solid residue (BSR)

Ying Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, a combined approach of chemical reduction and microbial stabilization was investigated for the remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated soil. The combination of ferrous sulfate and biogas solid residue effectively converted Cr(VI) into Cr(III), reducing the residual Cr(VI) content to a level well below the screening value for soil contamination. The treatment also eliminated the phytotoxicity of the soil and caused significant changes in the microbial community.

Remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil using combined chemical leaching and reduction techniques based on hexavalent chromium speciation

Donghui Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that using oxalic acid and citric acid at 0.02 mol/L, with a liquid-solid ratio of 5:1 and a leaching time of 45 minutes, the removal rate of Cr(VI) was 62.7%, with residual Cr(VI) in soil at 126 mg/kg and a soil pH of 4.09 after leaching. Between 25 and 90 degrees Celsius, with a molar ratio of 25:1 of FeSO4 center dot 7 H2O to Cr(VI), the reduction rate of Cr(VI) in soil ranged from 54.0% to 98.4%, with leaching concentration of Cr(VI) in soil at 0.01-0.29 mg/L. The most cost-effective reduction occurred at 90 degrees Celsius for 60 minutes, resulting in only 2.7 mg/kg of residual Cr(VI) in soil.

Removal of zinc from wastewater using orange, pineapple and pomegranate peels

S. N. Turkmen Koc et al.

Summary: The study aimed to produce a low-cost adsorbent for zinc removal from wastewater using microwave carbonized orange, pineapple, and pomegranate peels, activated chemically with ZnCl2 and H2SO4. The optimal adsorption efficiency was influenced by fruit type, microwave processing time, activating agent type, and adsorption contact time. Environmentally friendly and cost-effective activated carbons were successfully produced for zinc adsorption from wastewater, showing promising results for potential practical applications.

Remediation of soil contaminated with high levels of hexavalent chromium by combined chemical-microbial reduction and stabilization

Lijuan Fu et al.

Summary: The study found that the conversion rate of Cr(VI) in soil contaminated with high levels of Cr(VI) reached 97% after chemical reduction combined with microbial stabilization treatment, and the concentration of Cr(VI) in toxic solutions can be reduced by 95%. The bacterial community changed significantly during the reduction process of Cr(VI), with a decrease in species abundance and evenness. Dominant species in this study were Bacillus spp. and Halomonas spp.

Effect of humus on the remediation of arsenic-contaminated soil by electrokinetic technology

Yunfeng Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of humus on the remediation of arsenic-contaminated soil by electrokinetic technology. The results showed that the addition of humus significantly promoted the release of As from the soil during electrokinetic remediation, leading to an obvious enhancement in remediation efficiency. The presence of oxygen-containing functional groups in humus desorbed As from the soil particles, making humus a green agent to improve the EKR technology.

Summary: The study successfully stabilized Cr(VI) in soil using nZVI modified with cationic polyquaternium-7 (M550-nZVI) or anionic carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-nZVI). M550-nZVI showed better resistance to oxidation, while CMC-nZVI exhibited higher reactivity and achieved a higher removal rate of Cr(VI).

Remediation of oil-based drilling waste using the electrokinetic-Fenton method

Sajjad Adhami et al.

Summary: By enhancing the EK method with Fenton technique and using copper and iron electrodes, this study successfully removed TPH from drilling waste, achieving a removal rate of up to 77%. The use of iron electrodes also helped improve the removal efficiency, with a removal rate of 69.6%. These results indicate that the EK-Fenton method combined with copper electrodes is effective in removing TPH from drilling waste.

Effective removal and expedient recovery of As(V) and Cr(VI) from soil by layered double hydroxides coated waste textile

Shifeng Zhao et al.

Summary: Mg-Al layered double hydroxides coated waste textile (MgAl-LDH@WT) were used for the removal of toxic metal ions such as As(V) and Cr(VI) from soil samples, yielding high adsorption capacities and showing a preferential adsorption of As(V) over Cr(VI). The results demonstrate a promising strategy for the excellent removal and convenient recovery of anionic heavy metals contaminated soil, highlighting the method's stability and partition capability.

Influence of polarity exchange frequency on electrokinetic remediation of Cr-contaminated soil using DC and solar energy

Rong Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of different electrode exchange frequencies on the remediation of Cr-contaminated soil, finding that polarity exchange electrokinetic remediation can reduce the adverse effects on soil pH, but repeated migration can decrease removal efficiency. During the EKR processes, Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) and the content of Cr(III) significantly increased.
