Experimental study on external explosion for vented hydrogen deflagration in a rectangular tube with different vent coefficients

Qiao Wang et al.

Summary: Experiments on hydrogen-air vented deflagration in a smooth rectangular tube were conducted with various vent areas for different hydrogen concentrations. The effects of vent area for different hydrogen concentrations were discussed on the build-up of internal/external overpressures and the evolution of external flow field. The increase of hydrogen concentration promotes external mixture reactivity and the external overpressure.

Simulating vented hydrogen deflagrations: Improved modelling in the CFD tool FLACS-hydrogen

M. Lucas et al.

Summary: This paper validates the computational fluid dynamics tool FLACS-Hydrogen in vented deflagration experiments conducted in 20-foot shipping containers, showing that peak pressures for stratified mixtures are higher than for homogeneous hydrogen mixtures. Using an improved numerical solver and physics models leads to significantly better predictions of peak pressures.

A study of pressure characteristics of methane explosion in a 20 m buried tunnel and influence on structural behaviour of concrete elements

Qingfei Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of structural members against explosion loads in utility tunnels containing gas lines. Two 9.5% methane-air explosions in a concrete tunnel were conducted and pressure characteristics were compared with previous studies. Concrete specimens of different strengths were tested, showing cracks on all specimens. The pressure distribution in the tunnel was found to be non-uniform due to the tunnel's large size and gas leakage during blast.

Protective effect of unbonded prestressed ultra-high performance reinforced concrete slab against gas explosion in buried utility tunnel

Yekai Yang et al.

Summary: The protective effect of unbonded prestressed ultra-high performance reinforced concrete slab against gas explosion was investigated, showing excellent performance in resisting gas explosions. Gas explosions may have little effect on the circular section pipeline in the independent cabin.

Structural response of corrugated plates under blast loading: The influence of the pressure-time history

A. Cacoilo et al.

Summary: The propagation of shock waves in confined environments poses complex challenges due to reflections, diffraction, and wave superposition. This research analyzed the sensitivity of a metallic plate's structural response to various shock wave parameters, finding that impulse, peak pressure, and pulse duration significantly affect the deflection response. Accurately defining negative impulse trains in the pressure-time history is crucial for modeling structural responses accurately, and complex pressure profiles can be simplified for analysis and design purposes.
