Genetically engineered microbial remediation of soils co-contaminated by heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: Advances and ecological risk assessment

Chen Wu et al.

Summary: Soils contaminated with heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have become a global environmental concern, requiring urgent remediation. Traditional physical and chemical methods are not environmentally friendly, while genetically engineered microorganisms offer a more ecofriendly and cost-effective strategy for efficient bioremediation.

The effect of chelating agents on iron plaques and arsenic accumulation in duckweed (Lemna minor)

Gui-Li Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of chelating agents on arsenic accumulation in aquatic plants, as well as the uptake of phosphate and iron. The results showed that chelating agents increased As accumulation in L. minor plants by desorbing and mobilizing As from Fe plaques, while also enhancing the uptake of P and Fe. This provides a theoretical basis for using chelating agents to remediate As-contaminated waters with duckweed.

Coupled with EDDS and approaching anode technique enhanced electrokinetic remediation removal heavy metal from sludge

Jian Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel technology was applied to remove heavy metals from sludge, with the coupled EDDS and AA-EK technique showing enhanced efficiency. The results indicated that the technique led to increased electric current and predominant heavy metal removal, demonstrating its effectiveness in electrokinetic remediation.

Process design and validation of a new mixed eluent for leaching Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, Ni, and Zn from heavy metal-polluted soil

Yuyan Zhao et al.

Summary: Chemical leaching, using a mixed eluent of EDDS + FeCl3, showed significant advantages in simultaneously removing multiple heavy metals from contaminated soil. Adjusting the concentration, pH conditions, and mass ratio of the mixed eluent can improve the leaching efficiency for different soil types and target elements. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that the enhanced chelating ability of EDDS + FeCl3 was attributed to changes in the functional groups in the solution, making it a potential feasible strategy for soil remediation.
