Pacific walrus diet across 4000 years of changing sea ice conditions

Casey T. Clark et al.

Summary: Declining sea ice is expected to cause unpredictable changes in the Arctic's physical and biological systems. This study used stable isotope compositions to investigate the effects of changing sea ice conditions on the diet of Pacific walruses over the past 4000 years. The results suggest that sea ice conditions were not the primary driver of changes in walrus diet, and the trophic changes in the Arctic ecosystem may still be ongoing or unprecedented in the last 4000 years.

Niches of marine mammals in the European Arctic

K. M. MacKenzie et al.

Summary: The Arctic is warming rapidly, posing a threat to marine mammals and their ecosystem. The study of stable isotopes and trophic webs reveals clear separation in trophic behavior and carbon sources among different species, indicating significant niche partitioning. This could have implications for the structure and connectivity of the Arctic ecosystem.

Walruses on the Dnieper: new evidence for the intercontinental trade of Greenlandic ivory in the Middle Ages

James H. Barrett et al.

Summary: This study examines the geographical origin of walrus specimens discovered in Kyiv, Ukraine in the 12th century. Through archaeological typology, ancient DNA, and stable isotope analysis, it is found that some of the specimens can be attributed to a western Greenland origin. This suggests that the demand for walrus products in the medieval period extended beyond Western Europe to include Ukraine, Russia, Byzantium, and Asia.

Genomic sex identification of ancient pinnipeds using the dog genome

Maiken Hemme Bro-Jorgensen et al.

Summary: The study successfully utilized the dog nuclear genome for genetic sex identification in pinnipeds, accurately identifying individual sex with a high degree of reliability. By applying this method to a range of ancient pinniped samples, including walruses, grey seals, and harp seals, distinct male and female sex groups were identified, shedding light on the potential effects of human activities and environmental change on these animal populations.

Improved quality control criteria for stable carbon and nitrogen isotope measurements of ancient bone collagen

Eric J. Guiry et al.

Summary: The carbon and nitrogen isotopic compositions of bone and tooth collagen are important for studying past biological, environmental, and cultural phenomena. Collagen provides reliable quality control criteria for isotopic data, with traditional C:N QC parameters sometimes leading to unreliable isotopic compositions due to contamination. New collagen QC criteria specific to certain taxa and environments have been proposed based on a model's results, aiming to improve the interpretation of isotopic data by accurately identifying contaminated samples.

Itinerant Assemblages and Material Networks: the Application of Assemblage Theory to Networks in Archaeology

Sara Ann Knutson

Summary: This paper examines the potential contribution of Assemblage Theory to archaeology, emphasizing the improved explanatory models it offers and the importance of broadening the traditional definitions of assemblage. Through a case study of walrus ivory objects, it demonstrates the value of applying Assemblage Theory in analyzing economic behavior and political change.
