Capturing the Moment of Emergence of Crystal Nucleus from Disorder

Takayuki Nakamuro et al.

Summary: Crystallization is the process of forming an organized solid through nucleation and growth of atoms or molecules, which is inherently stochastic. Experimental observation of NaCl nanocrystal nucleation and growth revealed both random fluctuations and controlled crystal formation at different temperatures. The role of graphitic surface and mechanical vibration in the process was experimentally highlighted.

Self-Assembly Mechanism in Nucleation Processes of Molecular Crystalline Materials

Koji Harano

Summary: This passage explains the composition of molecular crystals and the research on their nucleation mechanism, emphasizing the critical role of crystal nuclei in determining crystal structure. By using single-molecule-level electron microscopic imaging and bulk analysis, the self-assembly mechanism of crystal nuclei of organic crystals and metal-organic frameworks are investigated, along with how nucleating crystals acquire order and dimensionality in the nucleation process.

Single-Crystalline Ultrathin 2D Porous Nanosheets of Chiral Metal-Organic Frameworks

Yuhao Liu et al.

Summary: Highly ordered two-dimensional (2D) materials with in-plane nanopores are important for various applications, but their synthesis and characterization remain challenging. This study shows that ultrathin 2D MOF nanosheets with intrinsic porosity can be prepared by exfoliating layered MOFs. The nanosheets can be incorporated into polymer matrices to form mixed-matrix membranes, and their fluorescence can be quenched by chiral terpenes for chiral optical sensing applications.

New Magic Au24 Cluster Stabilized by PVP: Selective Formation, Atomic Structure, and Oxidation Catalysis

Shingo Hasegawa et al.

Summary: An unprecedented magic number cluster, Au24Clx, was selectively synthesized by kinetically controlled reduction in a microfluidic mixer with a large excess of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP). The stability of Au24Clx clusters, their interaction with PVP, and their catalytic properties in the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol derivatives were investigated. Results showed that Au24Clx clusters are stable but fluctuate, with electron-rich nature due to interaction with PVP.
