Microtensile properties and failure mechanisms of cortical bone at the lamellar level

Daniele Casari et al.

Summary: New experiments on dry ovine bone discovered that microtensile strength at the scale of a single lamella is greater than at the macroscopic level, exhibiting brittleness and strength anisotropy. Analysis suggests that bone strength at the lamellar level is remarkably tolerant to variations of fibril orientation.

Crashworthiness performance of concentric structures with different cross-sectional shapes under multiple loading conditions

Sadjad Pirmohammad

Summary: This study evaluates the crashworthiness performance of concentric structures with different numbers of tubes and cross-sectional shapes. The hexagonal structure with two tubes and octagonal, decagonal, and circular structures with three tubes exhibit the best results. Additionally, the decagonal structure with three tubes shows the highest energy absorbing characteristics among all structures studied.

Internally stiffened foam-filled carbon fiber reinforced composite tubes under impact loading for energy absorption applications

Tamer A. Sebaey et al.

Summary: Fiber reinforced plastics filled with polyurethane foam are widely used as energy absorbers for safety enhancement. The study found that using PU foam inside CFRP composite tubes increases peak load and energy absorption, while internal CFRP reinforcements do not significantly improve energy absorption but do improve peak load.

Low-velocity impact response of tube-reinforced honeycomb sandwich structure

Yunwei Zhang et al.

Summary: By filling the honeycomb holes with metallic tubes, the load carrying capacity and impact resistance of the honeycomb sandwich structure are improved, leading to a more uniform distribution of stresses and deformations. The tube-reinforced structure absorbs impact energy more quickly and significantly reduces front face-sheet deformation.

A novel design of thin-walled energy absorption structures with local surface nanocrystallization

Xinsheng Xu et al.

Summary: An efficient energy absorption design using ultrasonic impact surface nanocrystallization treatment is proposed to enhance the crashworthiness of square thin-walled tubes. By optimizing the layout of local surface nanocrystallization, the specific energy absorption can be increased significantly without modifying the tube's configuration or adding mass. Experimental study confirms the effectiveness of this technology in improving the crashworthiness of square thin-walled tubes.

Summary: The crashworthiness of thin-walled structures combining multiple cells, corners, and edge-junctions has been examined in this study. Results show that the crash performance improves with an increase in the number of cells, and the finite element model validated for axial loading is predicted to be accurate for oblique loading as well. Various approximation and optimization methods have been utilized to obtain the best crash performance structure.
