Predominant microbial iron reduction in sediment in early Cambrian sulfidic oceans

Chaochao Xing et al.

Summary: Microbial sulfate reduction (MSR) and microbial iron reduction (MIR) are two major anaerobic metabolic pathways that account for the majority of anaerobic organic matter degradation in modern marine sediments. The early Cambrian ocean might be characterized by extensive MSR in seawater and MIR in sediment porewater, differing from the predominantly MSR in sediment observed in modern sulfidic oceans like the Black Sea.

Summary: New radio-isotopic dates from Late Ediacaran strata in South China reveal time transgressive features and two large negative carbon isotope excursions between 575 and 550 million years ago, providing important calibration for the pace of Ediacaran evolution and changes in the carbon cycle.

Precipitation of Marinoan cap carbonate from Mn-enriched seawater

Meng Ning et al.

Summary: The rapid diversification of eukaryotes after the Marinoan Snowball Earth glaciation suggests a possible link between the extreme icehouse climate and biological evolution. The delayed cap carbonate precipitation post melting of the Marinoan Snowball Earth glaciation indicates suboxic postglacial seawater enriched in Mn2+. Likely due to continuous hydrothermal Mn2+ flux for about 15 million years, the postglacial ocean was enriched in Mn, with potential remobilization of MnO2 from glacial sediments.

Validating the deep time carbonate carbon isotope records: effect of benthic flux on seafloor carbonate

Weiming Ding et al.

Summary: The δC-13(carb) records of late Paleozoic carbonate sections from South China show a negative correlation with Fe2+ content in the carbonate, suggesting influences from benthic flux and seafloor conditions on carbon isotope composition. This indicates that the interpretation of δC-13(carb) should consider sedimentary processes and depositional environments in marine carbonate.
