Applicable scope of estimation of three-dimensional particle size distribution by the Goldsmith-Cruz-Orive and improved methods

Takao Ueda

Summary: This study systematically investigated the GCO and newly improved MGCO methods, finding that the MGCO method showed greater estimation accuracy, robustness, and sensitivity compared to GCO, regardless of the range of size distributions.

An improved Goldsmith-Cruz-Orive method for estimation of spherical size distribution from sectional size distribution, suitable for arbitrary size classes

Takao Ueda

Summary: The study developed an improved Goldsmith-Cruz-Orive method (ImpGCO) with configurable bins, and a simulator for spherical size distribution calculation. Results showed that when U-C was less than 3.5, neither GCO nor ImpGCO was recommended; in the U-C range of 3.5-6.5, ImpGCO performed better than GCO; and when U-C was greater than 6.5, both methods showed high performance, successfully eliminating at least 80% of bias.

Gene mutation of particle morphology through spherical harmonic-based principal component analysis

Wei Xiong et al.

Summary: In this paper, an additive virtual particle reconstruction technique based on spherical harmonic-based principal component analysis (SH-PCA) is proposed, allowing reconstruction to any specific relative length scale (RLS). By introducing scaling factors of different scale ranges, gene-mutated virtual particles can be readily generated. These gene-mutated virtual particles were then used to investigate the initial packing properties of granular soils in discrete element modelling.
