Highly Flame-Retarded Epoxy Thermoset Imparted by Bio-Based Phosphorus/Nitrogen-Containing Furan Derivative with Enhanced Mechanical Toughness

Summary: A bio-based phosphorus/nitrogen-containing furan derivative, TFAD, is synthesized and characterized for its application in improving flame-retardant and impact performance of epoxy thermosets. TFAD effectively lowers the activation energy and enhances the flame retardancy and impact strength of the thermosets. The results show improved flame-retardant properties, such as higher UL-94 rating and LOI, as well as reduced heat release rate. The flame-retardant mechanism analysis confirms the effectiveness of TFAD in both gaseous and condensed phases.
