Finding karstic caves and rockshelters in the Inner Asian mountain corridor using predictive modelling and field survey

Patrick Cuthbertson et al.

Summary: The study presents two models for predicting karstic cave features in the Inner Asian Mountain Corridor (IAMC) and conducted field surveys from 2017 to 2019, identifying 105 cave and rockshelter features. The model-led approach significantly reduces the target area for foot survey, providing an important tool for archaeological research in the region.

Steak tournedos or beef Wellington: an attempt to understand the meaning of Stone Age transformative techniques

Patrick Schmidt

Summary: Research on human uniqueness in prehistoric archaeology, particularly the use of fire to transform materials, is crucial. The approach to studying transformative techniques often focuses on complexity, but there are challenges in interpretation. An alternative framework based on modern-day cooking processes is proposed to better understand these transformative techniques.

Middle Paleolithic technological diversity during MIS 3 in the Western Tian Shan piedmonts: Example of the Katta Sai 1 open -air loess site

Konstantin Pavlenok et al.

Summary: This study reconstructs the general knapping scheme in the Katta Sai 1 assemblage dated to around 40 kya, identifying a new variant of human adaptation in the regional Middle Paleolithic. The locally collected river pebbles were knapped using a predetermined Levallois core reduction scheme. Though some volumetric features can be identified, the technology differs from other well-known sites in the region such as Obi-Rakhmat of Kulbulak where blade technology predominates.
