Fish welfare in offshore salmon aquaculture

Malthe Hvas et al.

Summary: The review discusses the ability of Atlantic salmon to thrive in more extreme environments, highlighting the impact of water currents on their welfare and the modulation of swimming capabilities by environmental and biological factors.

A new criterion for multi-purpose platforms siting: Fish endurance to wave motion within offshore farming cages

Giulio Brizzi et al.

Summary: This study proposes orbital velocities generated by wave motion as additional criteria to define the likely limits of exposure of fish stocks farmed in offshore environments, supporting the definition of an acceptable sea state for the whole Multi-Purpose Platform (MPP) design.

Animal welfare risks of global aquaculture

Becca Franks et al.

Summary: The rapid growth of aquaculture has led to significant environmental and public health costs, but there is limited understanding of global animal welfare risks. In 2018, there were 82.12 million metric tons of farmed aquatic animals from at least 408 species, with specialized welfare information available for only 30% of individuals. Immediate efforts are needed to ensure the welfare of high-production, understudied species in aquaculture.

What is the limit of sustained swimming in Atlantic salmon post smolts?

Malthe Hvas et al.

Summary: This study quantified the limit of sustained swimming in farmed Atlantic salmon and found impressive swimming capacities in the fish. Most fish were able to sustain swimming at lower speeds for up to 72 hours, while fatigue was reached quickly at higher speeds. The study provides important insights into the fish welfare at exposed aquaculture sites.
