Modeling of fast ionization waves in pure nitrogen at moderate pressure

Xiancong Chen et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigated the fast ionization wave (FIW) discharges in pure nitrogen initiated by positive polarity, high-voltage nanosecond pulses. The results showed a 'hollow' structure in the electron density during the FIW development stage, and the temporal-spatial evolution of N-2(C-3 Pi(u)) was influenced by the competition between different reactions.

Remote streamer initiation on dielectric surface

L. Kusyn et al.

Summary: In this study, the origin of filamentary patterns in a sinusoidally driven surface barrier discharge at high over-voltage in atmospheric pressure air was investigated. Time-correlated single-photon counting based optical emission spectroscopy was used to reveal ultrafast processes within generated discharges in both polarities of the applied voltage. The study found that the initiation of a complex streamer cascade under negative polarity led to the formation of long filamentary structures.

Simulation of pre-breakdown discharges in high-pressure air: II. Effect of surface protrusions

N. G. C. Ferreira et al.

Summary: The deviations from the similarity law observed in experiments on discharge ignition and breakdown in corona-like configurations at high and very high pressures are attributed to enhanced ionization of air molecules near microprotrusions. The 2D numerical modeling study shows qualitative agreement with the experiment for protrusion heights of around 50 μm. The enhancement of field electron emission from the surface of the negative electrode due to electric field amplification on microprotrusions was found insignificant compared to enhanced ionization in the gas phase.
