Phytoremediation using genetically engineered plants to remove metals: a review

Ibrahim Ilker Ozyigit et al.

Summary: Contamination by heavy metals in agricultural fields is a global safety issue, and phytoremediation using genetically engineered plants is a potential solution for removing metals. However, the uptake of metals in common plants is low, hence the development of genetically engineered plants to enhance metal accumulation efficiency.

Plant transporters: roles in stress responses and effects on growth and development

Ping Li et al.

Summary: Plant transporters play crucial roles in nutrient acquisition, cellular homeostasis, and stress responses. Different transporter families have distinct functions in plants, contributing significantly to abiotic stress tolerance, plant growth, and yield. Understanding the mechanisms of plant transporters can reveal how plants respond to stress, benefiting genetic improvement in resistance breeding.

Cadmium phytoextraction by Helianthus annuus (sunflower), Brassica napus cv Wichita (rapeseed), and Chyrsopogon zizanioides (vetiver)

Bolanos J. Benavides et al.

Summary: Through two greenhouse pot experiments, it was found that sunflower performed best in cadmium uptake. Although the bioconcentration factor (BCF) values of the three plants were greater than 1, the potential annual removal of cadmium was limited, which may not support meaningful phytoextraction practice.

Identification of a new function of metallothionein-like gene OsMT1e for cadmium detoxification and potential phytoremediation

Justice Kipkorir Rono et al.

Summary: This study identified a novel function of OsMT1e in rice, showing that its expression is induced by Cd exposure and enhances cellular tolerance to Cd. OsMT1e overexpression in rice resulted in improved growth and increased Cd accumulation, while RNAi lines exhibited reduced Cd accumulation and sensitive growth phenotypes.

Cloning and functional analysis of ZIP transporters in blueberry

Jiajia Gu et al.

Summary: The study revealed the functions of VcZIP family in mineral ions uptake and transportation in blueberry, indicating their crucial roles in Fe, Zn, and Cd transport. VcZIP6-VcZIP8 and VcZIP11 were involved in Fe uptake in blueberry, while VcZIP1 and VcZIP7 showed higher abilities in Zn transportation.
