Structural and functional changes in soil bacterial communities by drifting spray application of a commercial red seaweed extract as revealed by metagenomics

Khanjan Trivedi et al.

Summary: Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed extract (KSWE) application on maize enhances soil bacterial diversity, reduces abundance of certain bacterial genera, and enriches beneficial bacterial taxa important for plant growth and nutrient cycling. The altered soil ecology mediated by KSWE may contribute to the improved yield.

Efficacy of two seaweeds dry mass in bioremediation of heavy metal polluted soil and growth of radish (Raphanus sativusL.) plant

Dalia Abd El-Azeem Ahmed et al.

Summary: Seaweeds, especially when used in mixture, show significant efficiency in reducing heavy metal content in soil, promoting plant growth, and enhancing nutrient uptake. Their bioaccumulation capacity and presence of growth hormones make them effective bioremediators for soil pollution control.

Soil management practices of farmers in the KaneModified Letter Turned Commaohe Bay watershed and potential for implementing algae-based soil amendments

Frederick Reppun et al.

Summary: In Kane'ohe Bay, efforts were made to mitigate invasive marine algae and repurpose it as an agricultural resource. Farmers showed interest in using algal soil inputs to improve soil quality and productivity, but unexpectedly, algal levels declined. Organizations facilitating communication between farmers and conservation agencies may promote wider adoption of algae as a soil amendment if levels rebound.

Reducing Nitrogen Input in Barley Crops While Maintaining Yields Using an Engineered Biostimulant Derived From Ascophyllum nodosum to Enhance Nitrogen Use Efficiency

Oscar Goni et al.

Summary: Intensive agricultural production utilizes large amounts of nitrogen fertilizers, but a significant portion is lost to the environment, leading to pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Using biostimulants derived from brown seaweed extracts can improve nitrogen use efficiency in crops, reducing the need for excessive fertilizer application.

Summary: The study suggests that macroalgae are suitable for agricultural use to enrich soil with carbon, nitrogen, and phosphate, containing complex polysaccharides and sulfated polysaccharides with diverse sugar compositions. The process of algae degradation remains unclear, but microbiological community analysis shows marine origins and potential algae degradation metabolisms in the algae waste biomass.

Effects of Seaweed Extracts on the Growth, Physiological Activity, Cane Yield and Sucrose Content of Sugarcane in China

Diwen Chen et al.

Summary: Seaweed extracts (SEs) are widely used as biostimulants in crop management due to their growth-promoting and stress-resistant effects. Spraying SEs during the early elongation stage plays a vital role in promoting sugarcane growth and improving the efficiency of nutrient utilization, with better yield-increasing effects observed in years with less rainfall. Additionally, spraying SEs at the M stage can increase sucrose content and enzyme activity, contributing to higher cane yield and sucrose accumulation, especially under drought stress conditions.
