Numerical investigation of semifilled-pipe flow

Julian Brosda et al.

Summary: This study presents a high-resolution dataset of turbulent flow in a semifilled pipe using direct numerical simulation, revealing some flow phenomena that have not been reported previously, such as the presence of an inner secondary cell in the mixed corner. Additionally, the study demonstrates distributions of the complete Reynolds stress tensor and the mechanism for generating mean streamwise vorticity.

Energetic motions in turbulent partially filled pipe flow

Henry C-H Ng et al.

Summary: Investigation of turbulent partially filled pipe flow using stereoscopic particle imaging velocimetry reveals significant azimuthal variation in turbulent kinetic energy and a preference for sides and bottom quadrant of the pipe in large- and very-large-scale motions (LSMs/VLSMs). Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of the fluctuating velocity field indicates a strong dynamical connection between LSMs/VLSMs and the instantaneous cellular structures, contributing to the spatial redistribution of turbulent kinetic energy.

Free-surface behaviour of shallow turbulent flows

Fabio Muraro et al.

Summary: In the last two decades, there has been a considerable increase in interest in the free-surface behaviour of gravity-driven shallow turbulent flows. Observing free-surface behaviour is believed to provide useful information about the hydrodynamic characteristics of the flow and enables remote monitoring of river flows. This paper reviews the state-of-art in this area, aiming to gather relevant information, use uniform terminology, and analyze gaps in knowledge about the linkages between free-surface behaviour and underlying hydrodynamic processes.
