Wall shear stress and wall heat flux in a supersonic turbulent boundary layer

Fulin Tong et al.

Summary: The study reports the characteristics of wall shear stress and wall heat flux in a supersonic turbulent boundary layer using direct numerical simulation, with an analysis of statistical data and a detailed conditional analysis on extreme fluctuation events. The results show a different mechanism for the generation of extreme positive and negative events in wall heat flux compared to wall shear stress.

Skin-friction and heat-transfer decompositions in hypersonic transitional and turbulent boundary layers

Dehao Xu et al.

Summary: The analysis of the decompositions of the skin-friction and heat-transfer coefficients in hypersonic transitional and turbulent boundary layers reveals that the overshoot phenomena in wall skin friction and heat transfer are mainly caused by the change in mean velocity profiles and the viscous dissipation, respectively. These observations differ from previous findings that attribute the overshoot to the Reynolds shear stress and Reynolds heat flux. Additionally, it is observed that the strongly cooled wall temperature and high Mach number can slightly affect the contribution of the Reynolds shear stress and weaken the contribution of mean convection due to compressibility effects. Moreover, the relative contributions of mean convection, pressure dilatation, viscous dissipation, and the Reynolds heat flux increase with wall temperature.

Effect of wall temperature on the kinetic energy transfer in a hypersonic turbulent boundary layer

Dehao Xu et al.

Summary: The study shows that a cold wall temperature can enhance the local reverse transfer of kinetic energy and suppress the local direct transfer. The average filtered spatial convection and average filtered viscous dissipation dominate near the wall, while the average subgrid-scale flux of kinetic energy peaks in the buffer layer. Helmholtz decomposition reveals a strong transfer of the solenoidal component of fluctuating kinetic energy in the buffer layer and a significant transfer of the dilatational component in the near-wall region.

Effect of heat source on statistics and scaling in compressible homogeneous shear turbulence

Yuandong Chen et al.

Summary: The effects of a strong heat source on compressible homogeneous shear turbulence are studied, with a focus on the dilatational components of flow fields and small-scale structures. The study found that the behavior of dilatational components and small-scale structures are significantly influenced by the presence of a strong heat source.

Dense gas effect on small-scale structures of compressible isotropic turbulence

Lishu Duan et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the compressible homogeneous isotropic turbulence of dense gas, focusing on the enstrophy production rate and flow topology effects. The dense gas effect leads to a reduction in enstrophy production in the compression region and weakening of enstrophy loss in the expansion region.

Compressibility effects on hypersonic turbulent channel flow with cold walls

Ming Yu et al.

Summary: The effects of compressibility in hypersonic turbulence over cold walls are enhanced as wall temperature decreases, leading to rapid increase in velocity divergence and turbulent Mach number. As wall temperature decreases, dilatational components gradually dominate vertical motion.

Compressibility effect in hypersonic boundary layer with isothermal wall condition

Dehao Xu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that in the isothermal hypersonic boundary layer, the cold wall condition enhances the occurrence of different events and the correlations between velocity and temperature, with this influence being most significant in the near-wall region.
