Effect of the duct and the pre-swirl stator on the wake dynamics of a pre-swirl pumpjet propulsor

Denghui Qin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the flow of a pre-swirl pumpjet propulsor using improved delayed detached eddy simulation, and found that the duct has a weak effect on the rotor blades but the pre-swirl stator has a strong effect due to rotor-stator interference. The vortex structures of the models were compared, and different instability modes were discussed, especially the transition from stability to instability of the tip vortex in the R-D and PJP models.

Experimental and computational study of hull-propeller-rudder interaction for steady turning circles

Yugo Sanada et al.

Summary: The hull-propeller-rudder interaction of the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering Container Ship was studied through a combination of experimental fluid dynamics (EFD) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods. The study found that the propeller is more heavily loaded with reduced efficiency in port and starboard turning, leading to differences in hull vortices, propeller load, propeller efficiency, and drift angle between the two directions. The analysis also showed that the lateral (Y) force is reduced during turning, inducing a larger drift angle and more speed loss.

Flow over a hydrofoil at incidence immersed within the wake of a propeller

A. Posa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the flow over a hydrofoil in the wake of a marine propeller using large-eddy simulation. The impact of the propeller wake on the flow within the boundary layer of the hydrofoil was found to be substantial, increasing the skin-friction and producing significant spanwise flows. The incidence angle of the hydrofoil was shown to influence the expansion and contraction of the propeller wake, as well as the instability of the boundary layer on the pressure and suction sides of the hydrofoil.

Comparison of hydrodynamic performance and wake vortices of two typical types of pumpjet propulsor

Denghui Qin et al.

Summary: This study compares the hydrodynamic performance difference between stator-rotor PJP and rotor-stator PJP, revealing that rotor-stator PJP has better balanced torque character. The wake vortex structure and evolution mechanism of both PJPs are discussed, with observations of spiral precession and double-helix breakdown for stator-rotor PJP. The instability of tip and hub vortices is more likely to occur for rotor-stator PJP.

Full-scale simulation of self-propulsion for a free-running submarine

Liwei Liu et al.

Summary: This study uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to predict the self-propulsion performance of a full-scale submarine propelled by a high-skew propeller. Model- and full-scale simulations are conducted and compared, showing consistent results with minor discrepancies after adequate corrections. Discussions are provided on the differences between model- and full-scale self-propulsion results, including propeller performance, pressure distribution, boundary layer, and wake flow.

Numerical simulation of vortex instabilities in the wake of a preswirl pumpjet propulsor

Denghui Qin et al.

Summary: This study investigates vortex instabilities in the wake of a preswirl pumpjet propulsor through numerical analysis based on detached eddy simulations. By focusing on the rotor's vortex structure, the research reveals the evolution of vortices at different advance coefficients and discusses a unique multi-inductance instability mode of the tip vortex.

Wake instabilities of a pre-swirl stator pump-jet propulsor

Han Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the wake of a pump-jet propulsor with a pre-swirl stator using stress-blended eddy simulations, analyzing the flow field in detail through a systematic comparison of wake morphology under different loading conditions. The study examines the evolution, interaction, and destabilization of vortices, and observes the instabilities in the wake evolution process. The study also finds that secondary vortices enhance the destabilization process and lead to chaotic evolution in the wake.

Numerical analysis of the wake dynamics of a propeller

Lianzhou Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the inception mechanism of propeller wake instability and finds that the instability is caused by interactions among vortex structures behind the propeller and the high-speed shear layer, with azimuthal velocity diffusion playing an important role in the mutual induction process. A model is proposed that can predict the time and location of vortex pairing.
