Single-Phonon Addition and Subtraction to a Mechanical Thermal State

G. Enzian et al.

Summary: Adding or subtracting a single quantum of excitation to a thermal state of a bosonic system has the counter-intuitive effect of approximately doubling its mean occupation. The experimental demonstration in this study showed the doubling of mechanical thermal fluctuations using single-phonon addition and subtraction. This joint click-dyne detection scheme opens up new possibilities for optomechanical quantum science and applications.

Room-Temperature Mechanical Resonator with a Single Added or Subtracted Phonon

Rishi N. Patel et al.

Summary: Researchers have successfully performed single phonon addition and subtraction on a room-temperature mechanical oscillator using a cavity-optomechanical approach. Through strong quantum measurement and a tomography scheme, they observed highly non-Gaussian phase-space distributions and confirmed the counterintuitive doubling of the mean phonon number resulting from phonon addition and subtraction.
