Acoustic Mobius Insulators from Projective Symmetry

Tianzi Li et al.

Summary: In the presence of gauge symmetry, this study demonstrates the construction of Mobius-twisted topological phases by exploiting projective translation symmetry. Two Mobius insulators, including a two-dimensional one with first-order band topology and a three-dimensional one with higher-order band topology, are realized experimentally in acoustic crystals for the first time. The peculiar Mobius edge and hinge states are observed unambiguously through real-space visualization, momentum-space spectroscopy, and phase-space winding analysis. This work not only provides a new avenue for artificial systems with the interplay between gauge and crystalline symmetries, but also establishes a new framework for topological physics based on projective symmetry.

Switching Spinless and Spinful Topological Phases with Projective PT Symmetry

Y. X. Zhao et al.

Summary: The study reveals the possibility of switching the two fundamental classes via Z(2) projective representations, allowing for unique topological phases to be achieved in different classes. For PT symmetry, the occurrence of this switching mechanism is demonstrated when P inverses the gauge transformation required to recover the original Z(2) gauge connections under P.

Non-Hermitian route to higher-order topology in an acoustic crystal

He Gao et al.

Summary: The study discusses the impact of introducing losses on higher-order topological insulators in an acoustic crystal, demonstrating that losses with non-Hermitian properties can induce the emergence of higher-order topology, paving the way for exploring exotic non-Hermitian-induced topological phases.

Summary: This study focuses on the unique features of topological artificial systems, exploring the fundamental modifications of the conventional k.p method caused by the Z(2) gauge field, and the transformation of Fermi points to interesting topological phases by breaking primitive translations.
