Guiding Self-Assembly of Active Colloids by Temporal Modulation of Activity

Bo Zhang et al.

Summary: Self-organization phenomena in ensembles of self-propelled particles provide pathways for synthesizing new dynamic states. By controlling and manipulating principles, dielectric rolling colloids energized by a pulsating electric field can self-organize into alternating square lattices. The resistive and hysteresis behaviors of the dynamic lattices to compression and expansion stresses are uncovered. This mechanism can be applied to other active colloidal systems.

Hyperuniformity and phase enrichment in vortex and rotor assemblies

Naomi Oppenheimer et al.

Summary: This study reveals geometrical conservation laws that limit distribution of driven rotors in a membrane or a soap film and allow to predict their structural states. Experimental results show that ensembles of particles rotating in a two-dimensional fluid exhibit chaotic dynamics yet develop signatures of hidden order.

Stone-Wales defects preserve hyperuniformity in amorphous two-dimensional networks

Duyu Chen et al.

Summary: A novel state of many-body systems, disordered hyperuniformity, has been discovered, which possesses characteristics similar to both a perfect crystal and a liquid or glass. Through a topological transformation in two-dimensional network structures, the continuous introduction of Stone-Wales defects can preserve hyperuniformity while changing the static structure factor and revealing unique electronic and mechanical behaviors associated with different classes of disorder in 2D materials.

Fluctuating hydrodynamics of chiral active fluids

Ming Han et al.

Summary: Active fluids exhibit equilibrium-like properties when their fluctuating and activated degrees of freedom are statistically decoupled. The emergence of a single effective temperature in these systems parameterizes both the equation of state and Boltzmann statistics. By developing a theory for the fluctuating hydrodynamics of these non-equilibrium fluids and validating it through large-scale molecular dynamics simulations, the microscopic origin of odd viscosities and stress fluctuations in parity-violating fluids is illuminated.

Circular swimming motility and disordered hyperuniform state in an algae system

Mingji Huang et al.

Summary: Active matter consists of individually driven units that convert local stored energy into mechanical motion, leading to various nonequilibrium collective phenomena. One of these phenomena, anomalously large density fluctuations, can be greatly suppressed through effective repulsions between cells generated by fluid flow caused by cell swimming. This results in disordered hyperuniform states under a wide range of density conditions and suggests the possibility of using hydrodynamic flow for self-assembly in active matter.

Persistence length regulates emergent dynamics in active roller ensembles

Bo Zhang et al.

Summary: This study explores the tuning of vortex formation and characteristics in active roller ensembles by utilizing the persistence length of individual particles. The researchers reveal a direct link between the behavior of the persistence length and properties of emergent vortices, and highlight common features between the two systems, such as anti-ferromagnetic ordering of neighboring vortices and active turbulent behavior in particle velocity field energy spectra.
