A comparative study of dielectric barrier discharge plasma device and plasma jet to generate plasma activated water and post-discharge trapping of reactive species

Vikas Rathore et al.

Summary: This work compares the properties of plasma-activated water prepared using two different dielectric barrier discharge configurations. It is found that the concentration of reactive oxygen species is higher and the concentration of reactive nitrogen species is lower in the plasma-activated water prepared by one configuration compared to the other.

Dynamic analysis of absorbance behavior and peak shift of RONS in plasma-activated water by UV absorption spectroscopy: dependency on gas impurity, pulse polarity, and solution pH

Zhijie Liu et al.

Summary: This study utilized UV absorption spectroscopy to investigate the generation and permeation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) in plasma-activated water (PAW). The results showed that parameters like gas impurity, pulse polarity, and solution pH value significantly influenced the absorbance behavior and peak shift of absorption spectra of RONS. Additionally, the study found that introducing air and N-2 increased RONS absorbance, while the addition of O-2 decreased it. Moreover, the permeation distribution of H2O2 and NO2- was affected by different parameter conditions, indicating the complex relationship between RONS in PAW.

Measuring plasma-generated •OH and O atoms in liquid using EPR spectroscopy and the non-selectivity of the HTA assay

B. Myers et al.

Summary: Plasma-generated hydroxyl radicals and oxygen atoms were investigated, revealing that the HTA assay cannot distinguish between OH radicals and atomic oxygen, leading to inaccuracies in measuring aqueous OH densities. The experiments showed the significant role of atomic oxygen in plasma-induced liquid chemistry, highlighting the need for diagnostic techniques that take this into account.

NOx synthesis by atmospheric-pressure N2/O2 filamentary DBD plasma over water: Physicochemical mechanisms of plasma-liquid interactions

Nepal C. Roy et al.

Summary: The study investigates the physicochemical mechanisms of plasma-liquid surface interactions for NOx synthesis by producing atmospheric-pressure filamentary dielectric barrier discharge plasma over deionized water. Gas-phase plasma diagnostics were performed using optical emission spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and voltage-current curve recordings, while liquid-phase species were analyzed using ion chromatography and UV-visible spectrophotometer. Findings show that reaction pathways for reactive oxygen and nitrogen species formation in deionized water depend on different experimental conditions, with nitrite conversion to nitrates significantly influenced by reactive oxygen species. The energy yield for NOx synthesis ranges from 1.3 x 10(-4) to 3.4 x 10(-3) mol/MJ.

Optimization of process parameters to generate plasma activated water and study of physicochemical properties of plasma activated solutions at optimum condition

Vikas Rathore et al.

Summary: Plasma-activated water (PAW) has a wide range of potential applications, including as a disinfectant, pesticide, food preservative, cancer cell treatment, and fertilizer, depending on its reactivity and electrical conductivity (EC). This study investigated the effects of process parameters on the reactivity and EC of PAW, optimizing these parameters and exploring the impact of the physicochemical properties of PAW and plasma-activated solution (PAS) on its effectiveness. The results showed that factors such as air flow rate, plasma treatment time, water volume, and discharge power significantly influence the reactivity and EC of PAW, while the pH and EC of the original solution have less impact on the reactivity of PAS. Additionally, changes in physicochemical properties and the concentration of certain ions in PAW were observed over time.
