Untapped potential of 2D charge density wave chalcogenides as negative supercapacitor electrode materials

Mahmoud M. ElAttar et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional materials provide a new pathway for the fabrication of ultrathin, transparent, and flexible functional devices. However, the low electronic conductivity of conventional inorganic graphene analogues limits their use as supercapacitor electrode materials. Recently, 2D charge density wave (CDW) materials have gained attention as high performance nanomaterials in various applications. In this study, TaS2 is investigated as a potential CDW material for supercapacitors, and different polymorphs of TaS2 are evaluated for their quantum capacitance (C-Q). The results show that 2H and 3R polymorphs exhibit efficient performance as negative electrode materials for supercapacitor devices. The intercalation of alkali-metal ions also affects the C-Q of TaS2. Additionally, the number of layers of TaS2 and its interaction with other materials can further enhance the performance of supercapacitors.

Interplay of quantum capacitance with Van der Waals forces, intercalation, co-intercalation, and the number of MoS2 layers

Ahmed H. Biby et al.

Summary: This study investigates the quantum capacitance of the three main phases of MoS2 and reveals that the number of MoS2 layers greatly affects the material's CQ. The absence of Van der Waals interactions overestimates the bandgap and CQ, emphasizing the importance of VdW correction in CQ calculations. Intercalation of alkali metal cations impacts the CQ of MoS2 phases, with K+ and Na+ intercalations showing the greatest effect on enhancing capacitance.
