A New Approach to Quantifying Raw Material Selectivity in the African Acheulean: Perspectives from Angola and South Africa

Isis Mesfin et al.

Summary: A new morphometric analysis method was used to investigate the influence of pebble and cobble shape on raw material sourcing strategies at two Acheulean case-study sites in southern Africa. The study compared archaeological samples with geological samples to analyze material selection strategies at the sites. Overall, the research provides insight into variable selection strategies within the southern African coastal plain.

A West African Middle Stone Age site dated to the beginning of MIS 5: Archaeology, chronology, and paleoenvironment of the Ravin Blanc I (eastern Senegal)

Katja Douze et al.

Summary: The Ravin Blanc I archaeological site in West Africa dates back to MIS 5 and provides important data on the Middle Stone Age, showing behavior dynamics and technological features during that time period. The industry at the site represents early MSA technology, potentially influenced by the local Sangoan culture or the preceding Acheulean culture.

The lithic assemblage of the Acheulean site of Namib IV (Central Namib, Namibia)

Isis Mesfin et al.

Summary: Despite a rich archaeological record, the early prehistory of Namibia remains poorly documented, particularly in terms of human behaviors and responses to environmental changes during the Middle Pleistocene. Namib IV is currently the earliest evidence of human presence in the coastal desert, showing important economy and technical homogeneity in stone tool production.
