The Growing Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Workforce: A Solution for the Aging Population Living With Dementia

Lusine Poghosyan et al.

Summary: Redesigning the healthcare workforce to meet the needs of the growing population of persons living with dementia, particularly those residing in the community and receiving care from primary care providers, is a national priority. The shortage of adequately trained providers is a concern, but the growing nurse practitioner (NP) workforce could bridge this gap. Evidence suggests that NPs play important roles in caring for PLWD in primary care and can increase the capacity of delivering dementia-capable primary care.

Tanja Gustafsson et al.

Summary: The evaluation of the ACTION programme in home care settings showed high participation from nurse assistants in the first five education modules, but a decrease in the following modules. Nurse assistants found the web format easy to use and appreciated the importance of the content, but faced challenges such as time constraints and heavy workload. The study highlights the importance of organizational support and available resources in implementing person-centred communication in home care.

Factors influencing general practitioners' perception of and attitude towards dementia diagnostics and care-results of a survey among primary care physicians in Germany

Julian Wangler et al.

Summary: The study found that most general practitioners provide dementia diagnostics, but only half are involved in treatment. They generally see diagnostic work, communication barriers, and therapeutic support as common challenges. The research suggests strengthening geriatric competence among general practitioners and educating them more about support structures in dementia care.
