Use of rock-physics analysis of well logs to determine compaction history of Cretaceous shales in the Rovuma basin, Offshore Mozambique

Oscar J. Nhabanga et al.

Summary: This study examined Cretaceous shales from the Rovuma basin gas province, analyzing their brittleness and ductility within the framework of acoustic impedance limits. Significant sensitivity to pressure was observed, with some onset of chemical compaction affecting the elastic properties. The contrasting development and rate of chemical diagenesis in the same formation have important implications for future seismic exploration studies.
