Insect Transmission of Plant Single-Stranded DNA Viruses

Xiao-Wei Wang et al.

Summary: This review discusses the interactions between plant single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) viruses and insect transmission systems, including how viruses cross insect cellular barriers, insect responses to virus circulation, and possible viral replication within insects. Despite recent progress in understanding these viruses, many aspects of plant ssDNA virus transmission remain unknown and further research is needed to fully understand the complex virus-insect-plant interactions.

Simplified and rapid staining of leafhopper salivary sheaths in plant tissues for electrical penetration graph waveform correlations

Regina Gerstenbrand et al.

Summary: Herbivorous insects in the order Hemiptera utilize piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on plant sap, with salivary sheath feeders using flexible stylets to penetrate plant tissues. Studying the structure of salivary sheaths reveals details of feeding behavior and pathogen transmission, and can confirm the biological function of electropenetrography waveform patterns. A simplified histological procedure has been developed to observe salivary sheath structure rapidly and cost-effectively.

mRNA vaccination induces tick resistance and prevents transmission of the Lyme disease agent

Andaleeb Sajid et al.

Summary: The study showed that vaccination with 19ISP mRNA can enhance host recognition of tick bites, reduce tick engorgement, and prevent B. burgdorferi infection. Immunization with 19ISP also hindered the transmission of the pathogen in vaccinated guinea pigs.

Rice stripe virus: Exploring Molecular Weapons in the Arsenal of a Negative-Sense RNA Virus

Yi Xu et al.

Summary: Rice stripe disease caused by Rice stripe virus is a devastating plant virus transmitted by the small brown planthopper. Extensive studies have led to significant advances in understanding virus replication, movement, host immunity, epidemiology, and disease management. These insights will contribute to developing novel antiviral therapies and enhancing our understanding of virus-host interactions at the molecular level.
