Perioperative Temperature Monitoring

Daniel I. Sessler

Summary: The esophagus and nasopharynx are ideal sites for temperature monitoring during general anesthesia, while alternatives for neuraxial anesthesia and postoperative care include oral and axillary temperatures, as well as zero-heat flux forehead temperature.

Working with estimation-formulas to predict nasopharyngeal airway insertion depth in children: Looking at magnetic resonance images - A prospective observational study (WEND:LI-Study)

Marcus Nemeth et al.

Summary: In the field of children's nasopharyngeal airway length measurement, no landmark-method reliably predicted the optimal position. Among the three methods evaluated, 'nostril-to-tragus minus 10 mm' appeared to be the least inaccurate option and could serve as a valuable approximation until a more accurate estimation formula is developed. Careful clinical evaluation of airway patency is crucial during insertion.

Perioperative Hypothermia in Children

Marcus Nemeth et al.

Summary: Perioperative hypothermia remains common in pediatric patients and may be due to their vulnerable physiology or inadequate perioperative warming. An effective perioperative warming strategy includes maintaining normothermia during transportation, active warming before anesthesia induction, during anesthesia and surgery, and accurately measuring core temperature. Perioperative temperature management should also prevent hyperthermia in children.
