Making virtual health care accessible to the deaf community: Findings from the telehealth survey

Ashley Mussallem et al.

Summary: To reduce COVID-19 exposure risk, virtual visits have been widely adopted as a common form of healthcare delivery. However, the impact of this on the deaf population, who face communication and healthcare barriers, is still unknown. This survey aimed to describe the experiences of deaf participants with telehealth visits. The results showed that nearly two-thirds of those who used telehealth experienced communication challenges, and some had to rely on interpreters who maintain general certification instead of specialized health care interpreters. Standard protocols are needed to ensure equitable access and effective communication in virtual visits.
