Preparation of Reinforced Anisometric Patchy Supraparticles for Self-Propulsion

H. Esra Oguztuerk et al.

Summary: This study presents a method for preparing fumed silica-based anisometric supraparticles with well-defined catalytically active patches suitable for self-propulsion. The particles contain Pt-covered magnetite nanoparticles that can decompose fuel and propel the particles. Various additives and treatments are explored to enhance mechanical stability and long-time stability during self-propulsion. Confocal micro-X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy is used to investigate the internal structure, allowing for optimized patchy supraparticles for potential applications in propulsion-enhanced catalysis.

Dynamics of freely rising spheres: the effect of moment of inertia

Jelle B. Will et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of particle moment of inertia (MOI) on the dynamics of spherical particles rising in quiescent and turbulent fluid. Experimental results show that MOI affects the trajectory and oscillation amplitude of particles, but not the critical transitional values. Path oscillations are finite in all cases, with no "rectilinear" mode observed.

Active, Yet Little Mobility: Asymmetric Decomposition of H2O2 Is Not Sufficient in Propelling Catalytic Micromotors

Xianglong Lyu et al.

Summary: The popular principle of designing chemical micro-machines based on asymmetric chemical reactions like catalytic decomposition of H2O2 may not be sufficient in powering the micromotors into self-propulsion. Surface morphology plays a critical role in enabling/disabling the performance of catalytic caps on chemical micromotors. This study offers a refreshed perspective on understanding how chemistry powers nano- and microscopic objects by emphasizing the importance of an electrochemical mechanism over nonelectrochemical pathways in self-propulsion.
